What's the Hardest Standard Issue Topps Baseball Card to Find Centered?

55 Freese? 69 Brock? I am talking so bad you just can't find one, i.e. the second series 66 topps football C.L.
Kiss me once, shame on you.
Kiss me twice.....let's party.

1955 Topps Gene Freese or 1955 Topps Sherm Lollar. They are both nearly impossible.

The 55 Freese is pretty tough. This is the best one I have found and have been looking for a 7 for a while.

  • I don't know if this card is widely considered to be a toughie or not....... but I don't think I've ever seen a '66 Topps Clemente #300 that is perfectly centered AND does not have a significant tilt.

66 Clemente - not perfectly centered but pretty close.

    "Molon Labe"

  • Typical bad centering on these two guys. From what I've seen on the '75 minis posted lately, most of that whole set could be thrown into the mix.

I know with my 1967 topps baseball. There are more than one card but I think the # 609 Tommy John is a bear to fined high end and centered.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
in the 65 topps set another was walt bond and sonny siebert.

Not sure about the Smith being hard to find centered. I thought it was more difficult
in finding a specimen in 8 or better. centering could have been a reason.

I remember seeing many lower grade ones centered.

Bob Cerv in the 61 set was hard too from what I remember as was the Sheldon.

Not a super toughie, but 1954 Topps Ben Wade has always been a PitA to find dead on without print issues. The centered one always seem to have print issues and the ones without the print issues are always off center.

    I still haven't found a well centered 1973 5th series Checklist (#588) card yet....

Mine isn't great on centering but was good enough to meet the 9 criteria.

The 1969 Seaver isn't hard to find in high grade but it is hard to find without a tilt. I've seen a few 9s without the tilt but that's about it. The first 8 I owned didn't have a noticeable tilt. Unfortunately it had scribble indentations on the surface that PSA missed so I turned it in for grading credits. The 8 I have now does have a tilt.

  • in the 1980 topps: #451 Indians Team card.

Only 5 cards graded by the pop report. I had two graded 6 and 8. There is only 2 @ Psa 9 /none higher. I went thru 50+ to find those two with a decent centering.

  • Funny you should mention that card, James. I have a 1980 Topps set in NM or better that I put together myself, and the Indians team card is the only card I am missing. Has been for months.
    I guess it's not a coincidence!

Of the more recent sets, the '81 Reggie is a toughie... There are also a couple of tough ones in the '86 Topps (top/bottom centering being the culprit).
  • JVetteJVette Posts: 206
The 1962 Roger Maris is tough to find centered.
And the 1965 Charlie Smith is also tough.

Hi, hope you have been well.

Is the Smith tuff to find centered or tuff to find in the 8 grade?

I always thought it was abundant centered, just scarce in 8 or above.

Or is the fact it is hard to find centered the reason it was scarce to find in 8 and above?

I thought cards like Lynch, Bond, and Siebert were harder to find centered.

It's pretty obvious after all these years but the '79 Ozzie rookie has always been tough to find centered (AND without printing imperfections).

What about the 78 Molitor? Doesn't that usually have a ink smudge?

1975 Larry Haney, just a common, but L/R centering is off on a high percent that I have seen.

The 76 Brett is impossible to find with perfect centering and or no tilt! Printing defects too.............
76 Lefty Grove is another one that is a centering nightmare.................

1975 Claudell Washington if I remember now is the hardest 75 to find centered. 66 Perry is tuff too.

I own a 59 PSA 9 (oc) Billy Pierce. Sweet card.

    Hi Steve -
    Things are going great!!

I think centering is one of the major reasons the 1965 Charlie Smith is so tough to find in an 8.
Many of the 6's and 7's are clean, crisp and fresh - just off center.
I assume the result of submitter requesting NQs.
At least that's been my experience.

    All the best - Jack
