(UPDATED With 9 New Cards) Are these 86-87 Fleers worth subing in the group sub?

I have several sets and partial sets of 86-87 Fleer I have pieced together from many different sources. Some are EX and some are nice cards that came from unsearched lots and other finds here and there. I looked through 143 total cards of cards #1-20 and picked these six. I know the Birds both have a small print dot, but I was surprised they were nice all around.

If anyone has adivce on grading 86-87 Fleer, please chime in.

So what do you guys think? Sub these and keep going through my hoard or just keep them raw?

I'd say those are all lingering between 8s/9s. Id definitely sub the Birds.

Agreed, I would only sub the Birds, the other cards are $10 cards in PSA 9.

I agree. I don't see anything less than an 8 there unless of course something is hidden
  • Both the Birds appear to have fisheyes in the section where the name is.

All the commons are not really worth subbing unless they are definite 9's. With the stars, it depends on what you will do with them; sell, try to put together graded set, or just keep. I am trying to put together a graded set, but I also like having a raw set or two around.

Thanks for pointing out what already pointed out in my original post. image

The fisheyes on the Birds won't impact their grade. The first Bird is barely in range for PSA 9 centering wise and the second is not which means you will get 8s or 7s on them. The corners on some of the other cards appear to show some minor wear which means 8s. There used to be a website on 86-87 Fleer where the guy showed closeups of corners for PSA 8, PSA 9 and PSA 10s. Any white showing at all on a corner pretty much guarantees an 8. I have found that the difference between 9s and 10s seems to be whether there is any chipping or white showing in the blue borders.

If I had to guess I would say only the Chambers and Carroll might get 9s. You won't get your grading fees back for PSA 8 86-87 Fleer commons. Lee is pretty good at spotting 86 Fleer cards that aren't worth subbing. I would suggest asking him.

I try to sub 86-87 Fleer cards that I feel are definite 9s. For the HOFers I will consider subbing 8s but they have to have an outside shot at a 9 for me. The one 86 Fleer card I can't seem to pre-grade is Larry Nance, I have subbed three from my group rips and gotten two 7s and an 8.5. Otherwise I think I am at about 66% for 9s & 10s with 86 Fleer grading.

I would keep going through your hoard. Look for 4 perfect corners and then check the centering.

the Wayne cooper and the Tom chambers looks like a shot for a 9 or 10 , send those ones in

Nice cards. Agree with Robb's post. Bagley looks like an 8. That has always seemed to be a tough card to find centered.

Also unless you need to want to sell them, why not put them in a set in 9 pocket sheets. They'll look great there and you can always grade them down the road if you need or want to.

I know this is a PSA mess. board, but I would consider trying BGS for some of your better cards too. If you get all 9 subs, they sell for more in BGS 9 typically then a PSA 9 grade. Something to consider.

There are fisheyes on the Birds.

But seriously, definitely sub the Cooper and Chambers because they both have a shot at 10s. I'd also submit both Bird's because they have a shot at 9 and even if they end up as 8s you break about even. Bagley and Carroll are 9s at best and not worth submitting because they don't sell all that well as 9s. You're basically looking at submitting cards that are either have a shot at 10, are jackpot cards in 9 (only a couple in the set), or you will break even if they get their lowest potential grade (like the Bird's).

the chambers looks faded at the bottom. the cooper looks like it has some white on the lower left showing (maybe just the scan). i agree with lee and would sub the birds.

Thanks for the input guys, I have looked through so many of these that they are all starting to look alike haha. I dropped the Bagley and Cooper, but plan to sub the other 4 from the first scan. I also picked out these.

Checklist looks good... I'd be interested in any 9's that pop for my set if your looking to sell when the come back.
