Seriously, pull a Comstock with his name in YELLOW letters and throw it up on ebay, see what happens!

Or a Barry Jones with the same variation.

If you want to know anymore hard-to-find variations from this set, let me know.

The Beckett and SCD Annuals have detailed the errors, but there won't be pictures. Most are obvious, once you know the error and you wouldn't need a picture anyway. For instance...#270 Mark McGwire. One version has "1987 SLG .618" where the other version has "1987 SLG 618". The period is missing from the slugging percentage number.

The ones that have different pictures (the rest are either stat variations or color/logo variations) are:

#279 Jose Gonzalez. Correct version shows right handed batter. Incorrect version shows left handed batter (Billy Bean)

#588 Mark Whiten. Correct version has hand inside left border. Incorrect version has his hand outside the border.

#603 Wes Chamberlain. Correct version has photo with player holding bat. The incorrect photo is Louie Meadows and he is not holding a bat.

1988 Comstock has 3 listed variations in the SCD Standard Catalog...white team letters/blue team letters, white name/blue team letters, yellow name.

ALAS, no R2-D2 boner card variation for that year.
Kiss me once, shame on you.

Well no Glavine, Ripken, or any errors/variations. I did get a nice Schmidt, Ryan, and Boggs.

Thekid8 I pulled a pretty nice Gary Carter. PM your address and i'll send it your way!

Thank you everyone for the information. I will be placing a huge order of 17 diff wax boxes from BBCE here in the next 2 weeks, and I plan on getting about 2-3 more of these 88 Topps boxes.

Yeah, I'd say send in any minty Ripken (Jr.) cards. I sent in what I thought was my best 1988 Topps Ripken and it came back a 7, so there must be something up with that issue.

Yeah, this is the set that keeps on giving. There are several more that I will try to add as I can remember. Many of those listed above are ones I found over just the last year.

Also, almost all of the TL cards can be found in drastically different colorings.

Oh and there's a blank backed "Special Offer" card found in 1988 Topps Big packs.

  • I have some of these:

0A Special Offer A- Doubled arrow B- Black arrow C- Silver arrow D- Cards not included line is present E- Black arrow, T from not, visable at end of arrow

Are they worth anything to anyone? At one time I know I had them all besides the silver arrow.

2006 Bowman Chrome Orange Refractor Chris Carpenter

A few bucks for the black arrow ones. I have yet to see a silver arrow but I imagine they would sell well. I could always use a "cards not included" version but I don't know what it's worth. If you have one, put it up on ebay and see what happens.

  • 1986-1990, Topps was trying to maximize it's profit during the sportscard boom period. This resulted in poor quality printing and cheap card stock. 1988 is probably the worst from these years and even the minty looking cards have poor resolution that can knock the card down a grade or two.

Edit for spelling and RedBull side effects

Since such a large amount of 1988 Topps can be found with off-register plates, I have been actively hunting as many variations of the players that I collect. It's always fun to see how misprinted a copy can get.

But 1988 also has a huge amount of "minor" variations. Cards that were changed throughout the run (airbrushed, inked over, line removed etc).

I found it funny that Topps would cut every corner they could but still went through the trouble of correcting minor mistakes that might have gone undetected if they weren't corrected.
  • I agree. Some of the things they 'fixed' were pretty ridiculous.

Now look what you guys made me do. I had to go bust open a 6 box rack case I had laying around. Just opened 1 box and will open the others in the next few days. Anyway, I found a checklist with Hiligas as # 455.

Are the "A" versions listed previously in this thread the more difficult of the variations? Also, are these variations easy to get or are there some that are very difficult and could be worth a premium?

    thanks,
    Bob

See the previous comments above for which variations sell for a substantial premium. Mainly the Comstock with YELLOW NAME, Barry Jones with YELLOW NAME and the Glossy Offer Card "Arrow" variations are the highly sought after ones.
