Flea Market Find / H&B Baseball Bat Help

I have a small collection of player model bats that I have picked up for cheap with most being guys like Aaron, Schmidt, Banks, Ripken, etc. Just think they are neat for a buck or two and someday I will do something with them.So I went to the local flea market this morning and one of the regulars had five bats lying on the ground. Three were aluminum, one a mini bat, and one was a wood bat with bright blue electrical tape on it. I decided to give it a quick look and the name on the barrel was Lou Gehrig. So I gladly forked over the $3 asking price without even offering her $2. I had already seen that the bat was cracked, when I took the tape off I saw that it was cracked in another place and had 3 tacks in it, which I pulled out.

I looked on ebay and could only find these two Gehrig bats. I looked at a site with info on dating H&B Bats and mine seems to have characteristics of the 1960's but I did not think they released "retro" player model bats. I am hoping someone here can help me out with some info.
Here are the two on ebay (both are better condition and appear to be much earlier).

$1,000

$1,183

Here is the one I bought. It is cracked, has dents from rocks, and appears to be a much later model than those. So can anyone tell me anything? Even if it turns out to be worth only the $3 I paid it will still be one of my favorite bats haha.

  • American memorabilia sold a 1940's model Gehrig bat for 348.00 in 2007.
You can get the models off the internet for 400.00 now a days.

I don't believe yours is from the 1940's. It looks too white to be that old.

This one has the characteristics of a 1965-68 Bat according to the reference.

    Allen

When I was a kid in the 60's bats with names like Gerhig, Greenberg, O'Doul etc. could still be bought.

I would say your bat is well worth the 3.00

If it was uncracked and in 'good' condition I could see it going for 100-150.00

In the condition yours (looks a lot better then you describe) I'd say 75.00?

    Nice find.

  • The lightening bolt reminds me of Wonderboy

Looks like the sort of thing you see in eclectic lots some of the auction houses have. If you did put it up for sale, might generate more interest by including other items, either Gehrig, equipment, or from the same era

    Hi Allen,

The $1,000 and $1,183 bats above are both 1916-1929 models. The outside oval bottom for these models say "TRADE MARK REG US PAT OFF", whereas the outside oval bottoms for the 1930-1947 LS 125s will say "TRADE MARK REG". The 1948-1963 LS 125s will say "REG US PAT OFF"; the 1964-1980 LS 125s do not have anything outside the oval bottom.

The single word "powerized" on your bat was used only from 1935 to the present.

    Great looking bat incidentally!

    Wow Allen

    Nice 3 buck pick up!

Not sure of the exact date but still a nice store model pickup for the price of coffee!

What does it have on the knob?

    Thanx for sharing

It is worth $4. Nice job.
  • You might even want to look on www.gameusedbats.com. That is John Taube's site, the authenticator for PSA game used bats. I'm sure it's not a gamer, but he might be able to offer you some insight and pricing of the bat. He also offers resotration of bats, and your's might be a great candidate to put a few extra bucks into it to fix/clean it up and make a great vintage display piece!
