Im making my own set of trading cards!

Anyone ever attempt something such as this? My latest "project" has me occupied with producing a decent sized set of trading cards for the guys I work with. I thought if nothing else, it will be a neat keepsake for the boys to look back at 15-20 years from now. I have so far produced everything from my home computer (borders, fonts, photo placements) and just today took my test plate to the local printer to see whats going on. The printer has 140 lb weight cardstock in 8.5 x 11 size, and its about as thick as Topps cards of the 80's. The set will comprise 5 plates for a total of 40 cards and I will sell the sets to the guys at about cost...$10 per set.

    Blank backs?
  • Very cool project! Do you think it would be better to get rid of the black lines separating each card, making it easier to cut out? Make sure to update when you get them back from the printer!

    Hi Phil,

    Simply fantastic project!

You may be on to a real "money making" idea!

The backs will be as simple as it gets. Just a card #, and a few lines about the featured member.

I agree with that. It would make it a lot harder to produce with that black line between the cards that I don't think really adds anything to the design.

Any idea how many cards in the set? Chicago has a lot of members!

Excellent point, and something I do need to consider! I had 3 plates (all of the one shown) printed up today as test copies. I cut 2 sheets using an office paper cutter, and was not happy with the thin black border surrounding the white borders. The lines will be thinned down as much as possible for the final production run. I do need some sort of reference point when cutting the sheets however so all the cards will be of uniform height/width, but a very thin, light grey line wont interfere with the card's intended white borders too much.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!image

This set is designated "Series 1" and will contain a total of 40 different cards. There are 24 "battalions" in Chicago over 3 different shifts. Each battalion has roughly 6-8 pieces of fire apparatus with about 5 members to each apparatus on each of the 3 different shifts. This set just covers 1 battalion on 1 shift! Its alot of work so far, but because I have known most of these guys, and worked beside them for over 7 years, its a labor of love really. Not so much if I started making cards of guys I didnt know so personally. That would more closely resemble work than the fun im having with this project now.

Ask the printer if he could also cut them for you.

    Most have that capability.

    Good for you.

Maybe you could make the BC's and up inserts. The Chief or the Commish could be 1/1's...lol Or next time you see the Chief snag a piece of his white shirt and put it on one of the cards. image

I did the Topps thing last year and made up some of my own "PBA" rookie cards. I couldnt use the PBA logo, but the cards looked cool anyway.

Don't forget to include an autographed card in each set. Maybe an insert set of the vehicles

How many sets are you going to build? One for each of the 40 guys?

I have been debating this in my head. Since I plan on doing a "series 2" edition, which will feature other members of the area, I may want to print at least 50 sets. The drawback is that I get stuck for $8 for each set that doesnt sell. Still thinking it over.
  • I know of at least one collector who collects Fireman cards who might be interested. Would you be willing to sell these to the public?

Try posting this on the Nonsports Forum & see if there is any interest.

Great Idea & a great project. I wish you the best in your efforts.

I'm the Managing Director for Pelican Products Inc. Our Supersabrelight Flashlight is standard issue equipment for every fire fighter in Chicago through the commissary as I am sure you know. PM me a number to reach you at, I will help you out on this first run, by sweetening the pot to the first 50 guys that purchase sets from you. That will hope get the momentum going, and you will be off!

The generosity displayed in this forum is mind boggling! Yes, I too have the small flourescent green colored flashlight from your company.image While I greatly appreciate your offer to help, this is such a small project that even if none of the 50 sets sells, im out just a few hundred bucks, and I can absorb that. But again, thanks so much for your kind offer!

Those look great --- what a great thing it will be in 50+ years from now when the young family members are older and are looking through memories
My only 2 cent comment is ---- can you remove the white around the name --- the black on yellow would look awesome

MBMILLER - I remember my first deployment we were issued Surefire mountable lights for our rifles, then our 2nd deployment we were issued Pelican mountable lights. I dont remember the model number, but it was a high quality product!

What about game used? Maybe a patch card? Serial numbered RC's. Gold Foil? Auto cuts from employment contracts? Encapsulated DNA from the firehouse mutt? Error/variation featuring Rambo and a Unicorn?
