'01 Visitors Center $5 Unc Gold Commem for $280? Pics Added
I was looking through modern commems at the state show yesterday and spot a UNC '01 $5 gold visitors center with a price of $295 on the package. I asked the dealer if that was his price and he looked at the box and said, "How about $280?" I smiled, paid quick and walked away in disbelief at what just happened. I still can't believe it. UNC's are still in the $1,200 range aren't they? Going back to the show in a few minutes but doubt if anything can top that but I'll keep my fingers crossed.

<< <i>that would be a major screw up by the dealer if it is in fact a Mint State and not Proof issue. >>
It's the Mint State and not the proof.
I also bought a proof '02 Olympic 2 coin (silver and gold) commem set from him for $240. I'm going back today loaded for bear.
chill out FatGuy, my comment was just a bit tongue in cheek. really, though, the day a dealer rips a widow and passes the savings on to an anonymous collector will be the day i die. it seems clear that he wasn't aware of the $1000 "rip" and had the item priced wrong.

<< <i>I think the funniest thing is that you knew you were getting a smoking deal and you still hammered the guy for an extra $15!!!! When I find a decent deal (not even close to as good as yours), I'll just pay the dealer's asking price
If you re-read my OP you'll notice I asked him "if that was his price"? I didn't ask him to lower it. At the time I was actually wondering if the sticker was wrong and his actual price much higher. I didn't go into detail. I just asked "if that was his price."

<< <i>You should have asked if he had any of those Jackie Robinson coins nobody wants as well?
Believe me, I looked.
Very nice pick. It pays to be knowledgable.
This reminds me of a fellow forum member who picked up a 1883 VAM-10 Sextupled Stars in a very very very similar situation.
Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.

thanks Joe!
I can't help but contrast this to the soap opera going on in NN about the guy who cherry-picked a silver dollar worth thousands from a local dealer's junk bin. The guy has (unfairly, IMO) been raked over the coals by people who believe he should have declared his find to the dealer and offered to pay full price. This just seems absurd to me. It's the dealer's JOB to know his coins and if he doesn't, well that's all part of the game...
And I agree...
YOU SUCK!

Thats what I would have asked too. With that kind of buy my guess would have been the price on the box was what the dealer bought it for, not for what he was selling it for. Great pick up!!
I picked up some great deals on silver commems and flipped them right at the show and made about $100 for the weekend.
