I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    May I suggest the following:

Go to VAMWorld and join (you need to join to post to the discussion forum). Then post the picture on the discussion board. They have several Peace Dollar VAM enthusiats who could probably help you. You'll need some close up pics of the die breaks, date, other parts of coin, but they will help out.

What kind of paper did he used? I have seen other coins wrapped in tissue paper as black as pitch. 60 years ago they used to say to use kraft paper. That might have been an improvement, but it never worked that well for me.
  • IT LOOKED LIKE BUTCHER PAPER TO BE HONEST,HE LOVED HIS COINS AND TOOK THE GREATEST CARE OF THEM.I HAVE SHOWED THEM AROUND AND I AM ALWAYS BEING TOLD IT HAS BEEN CLEANED AND I SWEAR THIS IS HOW I GOT IT.HIS TWO FAVORITE COINS THAT HE CARRIED EVERYDAY WAS A $20.00 GOLD EAGLE IT WAS THE COOLEST COIN I HAD EVER HELD AND WHEN HE DIED IT CAME UP MISSING.
  • I WISH THE PICTURES WOULD LET YA ALL BE ABLE TO TELL ME EVERYTHING ABOUT IT,LIKE IS IT A MATTE HIGH RELIEF LOW,THE COLLECTORS I SHOWED IT TO ALL WANT TO BUY IT BUT DON`T WANT TO TELL ME ANYTHING WHEN I REFUSE TO SELL IT.THATS WHY I AM HERE HOPING TO GET TO THE TRUTH OF THE COIN. IT REALLY LOOKS LIKE A NEW COIN AND UNDER A 15X LOOP YOU CAN SEE LIGHT SCRATHES,I HAVE A SOFT CLOTH AND WEAR GLOVES WHEN I DO HANDLE IT.

If you don't mind spending a few bucks, you can always submit it to Variety Slabbing Service. Its owned and operated by a board member, messydesk. You can PM him and get the details how to submit. John does a great service. He attributes the VAM and then encapsulates the coin in a small slab with an insert that identifies the VAM, and describes it, including a picture of the main attribute.

  • I can see it is from the second low relief hubs - both obverse and reverse - the most common one.
I believe all the low relief proof strikes came from the first low relief hub.
  • OK I am still lost it is a low relief is it a proof, which I doubt? I may have to bite the bullet and pay to have it graded I just hate to waste the money if it is not,I would not mind it so much if I had a better idea and I think you all are leading me in the right direction, thanks

  • It is not a proof. It is from the wrong hubs and the wrong mint.
  • FIGURED THAT,IS IT WORTH SENDING IT IN TO GET GRADED?
  • I collect peace dollars .... based on the images provided, I would say that it is not worth having graded. I would place it in a cointain or similiar type holder so that has some protection from fingerprints and other possibly damaging things. Coins like this are great because of its provenance. It is important to you because it was owned by your grandfather. In many ways, that probably makes the coin priceless to you. Enjoy the hobby!

Are those die cracks between the L & I and E & R? Also, I see a blur where the mint mark is. Is it a 'D' or 'S' or a blur?

Based on the pics it appears that Granddad cleaned it before he wrapped it up. Looks like a common business strike 22-D with a couple die cracks that has been lightly cleaned or polished. It's not a rarity and certainly cannot a proof as it is a Denver issue. I see no reason to encourage the OP to waste time and money sending it to a TPG. Value...$15-$20 tops.

    RIP Mom- 1932-2012
  • THEY ARE VERY FINE CRACK LINES EXCEPT FOR THE ONE FROM R DOWN TO THE BUN IT IS BIGGER IT SEEMS, AND IT HAS A SMALL D THAT IS LOW AND KINDA TILTED
  • IT GOES FROM THE 1 INTO LI AND ABOUT 5 INTO THE TALLEST SPIKES ANOTHER FROM THE E INTO THE RIM DOWN INTO THE R AND DOWN INTO THE HAIR BUN THEN FROM THE Y DOWN TO THROUGH THE FLOWING HAIR THEN DOWN INTO TRVST AND ACROSS HER THROAT STOPPING ABOVE THE 1
  • Oh, by the way, Dixie. Welcome to the forum.
  • Dixie,
Welcome! Even if its a $1.00 Peace worth, $1.00, its still cool.

One thing, if I may... You might try pressing your Caps Lock button on your key board. In message board land here on the internets, its considered yelling or making a point. image

    Again, Welcome.
  • Thanks, not used to the typing.
  • Hi and welcome!

Did you scan the Peace Dollar or take a photo? Scanners can make silver coins appear dull and lifeless, even though in hand they show lots of luster.

  • yes I did scan them but I agree the real live sight of the coin is the best,I set my scanner to color photo but this coin is bright silver.I love the peace dollars they feel good when you hold them.I am starting to see items that may be in the coin or my eyes messing with me,I think I will go ahead and have it graded, may be a waste of money but I will know yes or no,but I sure love the thrill of the hunt hoping to find that one rare coin, and it sure would be nice to have as much info as possible and having fun doing it. thanks again
  • Here is a picture I took with my digital camera, maybe it will show ya what you need to see.

    Dixie:

Before you send it to a TPG, you should check out VAMWorld. Join the Wiki (its required to post on the discussion board) and post your query and pictures there. They have some really good VAM attributors and they will help you!
