  • << <i>Late 1970 (1970- 1976 are ok) baseball cards IMO suck because of poor design and overproduction. It's as simple as that. You are trying to defend the "Alamo". Just forget about it. chaz >>

That is a far different opinion than saying they are unaffordable, as you originally alluded to

The defense was never that the cards were high quality, the defense was simply losing eight cents per card isn't so much of a burden as to destroy good feelings someone might otherwise haver. I need to stop being so judgemental about other peoples financial situations and mental health issues

If someone wants to eat rancid cheese on moldy bread, they are free to do so. And if someone else wants to enjoy 1970s baseball cards, we shouldn't judge them in that area either

A lot of us collect for other than monetary reasons. If I want a box of "worthless" 79's I will buy them. I will enjoy opening them with excitment as I pull a Bob Horner rookie. I will enjoy getting some graded. I will enjoy keeping the cards in my collection. Why should I care that I could maybe buy them for $20 cheaper in 10 years!? In my life the money I spend on baseball cards is minescule compared to my total budget and I am not buying to get rich. I have a 401k for that... well, I have whatever is left of my 401k anyway.

We all know what happened at the "Alamo". Ignorance is bliss. chaz

Chaz--the fact that late 70's cards are overproduced/under-demanded has driven the price for those cards to the low point that they currently have (.05 cent/card or so...)

That's what a price is: a reflection of the current supply/demand of any given product.

Yes, you can make the argument that as a long-term investment you predict these cards will go down even further is a reasonable (and probably correct) argument. But what is not logical is to say that paying .05 now for late 70s is "overpaying..."

Ridiculous statement. I generation of collectors growing up in that era will always collect them. Yes, demand will be light in the future but to say they will not be "worth anything" is quite an overstatement. Complete sets, high grade cards, RC's, stars players will always hold value.

You misunderstand. Star cards will be worth money but the vast majority of those cards are crap. Look at pop reports and vcp. chaz

The '76 set has grown on me, and although the '78 set has some sentamental value as it marked the year I became interested in Baseball, I tend to agree that the mid to late '70's sets were just dull has all hell. I would also lump in the Topps offerings from '80-82 as well, Ripken rookie aside.

In fact, the only "conventional" Topps set that I really like in terms of design was the '79-80 Hockey set, with or with out the Great One's rookie card.

So what's your point??? If you read the earlier threads, PSA 10's I said will be worth money. PSA 9 star cards are worth some money but the vast majority of PSA 9's in 1979 are total crap and not worth the grading fee. chaz

My point is to provide the numbers, I really don't care about your back and forth with Tom and Minty.

My favorite years of collecting because my first pack opened was 1976 Topps .
My prime youth years was 76 to 79 so how can't I love them regardless
of psa 10's or value they will always be my favorites.

  • I recently have been purchasing some 70's Football cards that are basically beaters ex-mt - nm. I buy em knowing that the value will never go up and probably will go down, but to me they're worth every penny because they bring me back to my youth when I collected as a kid.

Just toss em in a binder to pull out and enjoy whenever you want and you'll never even think about there value or lack of value.

What happened to Mint's Guinness? What the hell is that, a dancing Habenero? Shades of Burrito Jimmy.

My love of these cards and why...76....bought out several stores of their cello packs at end of season.. cost for me was 5 cents per 25 cent cello....1977.bought two vending cases for 75 each and made 38 sets out of them...1978.bought cello, rack, wax caes from a jobber in 79 of these 78's....cost for 24,000 cards..120.00.. made 30 something sets...sold all the commons and just kept the stars.. the 77's stock was just not great and doubt many 8's or better.. just my card experiences
always looking for 1969 graded basketball
