Unless I missed it (which is very possible), Ron has not mentioned what he paid for the deal, so I don't think it can be accurately determined as to what kind of deal he got.
That being said, (and I dont care what he may have left for me to buy) I would not contact him until he called me looking for the rest of his money, and then I would discuss with him what I would need for an amicable settlement.
I would tell him in person, that you are cancelling the deal!
When he asks why? Tell him you noticed that the Mantle was "switched" (describe the better Mantle in detail with the wax on the back so he knows he was caught!).
Tell him you are not comfortable because other key cards may have also been switched, like the Mantle was!
Let him offer to return the correct Mantle, and reduce the price otherwise tell him to "screw-off"!
Very sad. The switch of some of the key cards is obviously not fair. Whether it is still a good deal or not is a moot point to me, because it was not the agreed upon deal. I once bought some hockey cards from a guy who explained the condition of all of the key carsd in an Email. When I met him I was able to look through several of the cards and they were okay. He seemed fair and honest enough, until I got home and spent more time looking through the rest of them. Many were creased and rough. I told him and he said, "Well, you still got a great deal on the cards, even if they are like that." Of course the deal was not good with the condition change and he wasn't going to refund because of his purposeful overgrading. I am glad you have the leverage of owing him half the money. I like the Walnut's opinion;
I'd politely go back over there or call and say something like "gosh, I'm confused and I need your help. When I was fondling your Mantle I could have sworn that it was well centered and with a wax stain on the back. Now the one I've got is off center and the wax stain is gone. Do you have two Mantles and did you put the wrong one in my box by mistake?"
Sadly, if the guy was willing to rip you off once he may not admit to it. Perhaps a balance of stating the facts as you know them and telling him what you are willing to do may be the best option. You should probably determine in your mind what is fair and settle for nothing less than that. Good luck!
I recently got hosed in a similar fashion but it was only a 87-88 Jordan that got pulled out of a set. I am about 90% sure it was there, but not positive so there was no point in a confrontation. But I did learn to always load my purchases myself.
Good luck with this deal Ron, I hope it works out in your favor.

Make sure you do not bring the cards with you!
