Does your wife/ GF approve or??

pennyanniepennyannie Posts: 3,929 ✭✭✭
The first 4 or 5 years that i collected coins my wife showed ZERO intrest. She really did not care one way or the other except from time to time she would comment on how much money was spent on coins. One day i was in a coin store and bought a bag of circulated wheat cents as a impulse buy (and they were priced cheap) I placed the bag on the table in front of my desk and it just set there for a month or so. One week end i went out of town to ride ATV's in the sand dunes and she must have been bored and started going thru the bag of circulated wheat cents. She called me and said she had found a worn out 1909 S and looked in my red book to figure out the price. Now she is always asking when am i going to get her some more bags!!! Last sunday i got a call from a local dealer saying he had the 3 bags of Lincoln wheats my wife had called him about. LOL We went and picked them up. I bet she has searched thru 200 bags or more since the begining. Every time we go out of town she looks on the net for any coin stores that may be on the way. As we drive and get close she will call them and check on wheat cent bags.

Works pretty good. She never complains anymore about the coins i buy as long as i keep her in wheat cent bags or memorial cent rolls. She will even go thru bricks of 25 dollar lincolns from the bank when we are out of bags. her goal is to complete a roll set in circ wheat cents. She has almost finished it with the exception of 7 rolls and she has some of those dates. If it ever gets done her average cost is just pennies each. She has had 5 of her finds certified, nothing great but she really likes them and i think it is cool because of the cost per coin.

Does your wife or girlfriend care what you do one way or the other with coins?

BTW the first bag she found the 1909 s in and to this day she has never found another one. The only 3 coins that she has never found is a 1955 double die and a 1909 s VDB or a 1914 D.

I've been collecting longer than i've been with my current girlfriend so it was more of a "do coins approve of her?" image

There are dealers whose wives are sick of coins or could care less.

  • My wife was skeptical in the beginning but now I'm finding that she's a lot more interested. She even picked this up off of ebay the other day!

Mine summarily refuses to go to coin shows. For somebody who is uninterested in numismatics I don't blame her.

I've found that many people I know that had a hobby that required money, and their wife disapproved because of money, the wife herself owned several dozen pairs of shoes, a few dozen purses that weren't cheap and some expensive rings on her fingers.

She is not too interested, but doesn't mind that I collect. Just have to keep prices a little bit secret image

  • My wife owns some proof sets, mint sets and has some nice Franklin rolls that were given to her, but she is not overly interested in adding to her collection.

My mother-in-law, however, has a nicer collection than I do!
I'd keep playing. I don't think the heavy stuff will be coming down for quite a while!

You need to "seed" one bag with a cheaper worn out 14-D or a 09-S VDB.

To answer the original question, my wife doesn't really care as long as the Mortgage and light bill gets paid. All she really likes are the toners if I start showing her my collection.

I don't know if my wife approves of my collecting as much as she tolerates my collecting.

But it has worked pretty well for 33 years next month of marriage. image

My wife puts up with them and asks me to keep it under $5000 or so a year, my girl friend thinks they are all silly. That is indicative of why they're ranked as they are.

    Disapproval in the beginning.

Once it was apparent to her that I was making more than I was spending, she had a change of attitude.

Wife loves anything that I buy thats gold bullion (coins, pandas, bars). She is FAR less tolerant on numismatic based pieces however, like a flying cent that might cost $300 for example. She is also very pleased whenever I pick up an order of silver bullion bars as well.image
