Why Don't More Bank Tellers...

Why don't more bank tellers at least educate themselves on
how to spot silver coins in their own trays??

It's not like they make so much money that they don't need
the extra cash.

We get stories here all the time about members seeing silver
in the teller's trays. It's not that difficult, they could do it too.

  • And look for cool bills with cool serial #'s - maybe I should apply for a job or get my wife to do it......?

    my tellers collect.

I don't think they can collect until after hours.

or unless they're smooth with it.

my asst. mgr. used to be head teller and always made customers first, and I imagine the same went for those collecting. However another branch had a semi-nasty teller that wasn't smooth when I'd peek over and ask for half dollars or such and she'd be sure to pull the clads first, or just flat out and say no I don't have any new bills or whatever I was hunting for that day.

Besides looking selfish if they obviously pocket them right off, it can look like potential theft even if it is not. back in the day, at the store where I worked, we had to buy food on the other side of the counter -only- just for appearances if nothing else.

My wife is a teller and despite having, a number of times, gone over what to be on the lookout for, she is frank in that often she does not have the time to give much more than a glance.

A glance doesn't cut it even with looking for silver due to the fact that edges can be deceptive due to the way they stack against one another that and Canadian coins.

Lastly, unless the coin counter is down, none of the incoming change from customers goes through the teller's hands.

I've often wondered this many many times before. Although sooner or later, they start catching on if you ask for certian types of coins/denominations often. Then, they undercut you. Them greedy tellers!

One reason might be that they do not care and the profit is/was not there to care. A silver quarter is worth 10x face now, a couple years ago it was not even worth a dollar. Then they may not know how to convert the silver coin into profit, and for so little money, not worth the time/effort/gas to do so. JMHO

Some do educate themselves......those are the banks/branches I avoid!!
  • My sister is a teller at a local bank and she is NOT a coin collector. However, she does keep an eye out for silver and other odd coins and notes that come through her window and passes them onto me. She managed to snag me 10 rolls of bank wrapped Lincoln Early Years (2009-P) before they were all gone. They only had one box and they went fast!

But, she did share with me that there is an informal competition among the tellers to try to find silver coins, Kennedy Halves, Ikes, errors, silver certificates, etc... Most of them either sell thier finds at local coin shops, swap meets or on eBay. Some of them keep them for their own collections. She mentioned that VERY few get by the tellers.

With all the publicity on coins the past few years, most of them have become very savvy about what is worth swapping for clad coins or new bills. I am sure her bank is not the only one doing this. I did give her last years Red Book to start her down the right path.

we've discussed collecting. one scored a barber once...

but whatever they have showing they always offer it to me. (when I see it)

Because most Bank Tellers are just that, Bank Tellers and not coin collectors.

Just because you handle a lot of coinage does not mean you know anything about them or even care to collect them. It takes a special breed of person to collect coins and unfortunately a bank tellers salary is usually not near enough to pay for this addiction......er......hobby!

I agree that most tellers don't care much about coins. I also agree that the money to be made in pulling out silver is just not big enough to motivate them to take time from their day to hunt for it.

At my bank I have a teller who is always looking out for stuff but he's really good about saving me rolls of the latest and greatest. They bag coins until they have full bags then they send them in to whomever. One time I asked him if I could have all the halves they had and his reply was "sure, but I already went through them and there are no silver ones..." Well, I found a silver clad out of about $90 worth of halves so he either missed it or didn't know about silver clad!

If that happens, next time just pick up the whole row. If you see a few silver quarters amongst the $15 or so dollars worth of quarters, just spend the 15 bucks and next time trade them back in for paper.

It's all equal and you get to keep the silver

My sister-in-law works at a small bank here in East Texas. She showed me on Sunday fourteen 1964 and one 1966 Kennedy halves that someone turned in just last week at her window.

I guess she was paying attention after all. image

Well, it's good to hear that there are a few
    tellers who pay attention.

My teller friend once handed me seven $100 bills. 1934 consecutive serial #s. They all came back graded 63 to 67.
Sold three and split the profit with her. Everyone is happy. I love tellers.image
