thanks I think I pulled another 8 though... this set sure is hard to pull 9's and 10's edges seem to chip very easy.

Too bad that Aikman isn't a 10. But obviously that's one of the best cards to pull from the 89 set.

You pick your cards up in person?? I paid for my Thursday but wasn't expecting to get them til Monday or Tuesday.

I wish mine were here, I'd be ripping as we speak.

I tore apart my office so I don't have a scanner but my first pack was 1989 score and I got a Jerry Rice. Then I got shut out for awhile. 1986 Andre Reed Rookie and 1988 Sterling Sharpe Rookie. Fun rip though.

At work and ripped while working. I think I got the Mike Schmidt run because I received a total of 14 Mike Schmidt cards from the baseball runs, no big rookies or anything else, just a few minor stars.

With the football, I got a few nice Dorsetts and a really nice looking Warren Moon Rc out of the 1985 Topps.

You should have ordered a 1973 pack too. image
  • Don't have a scanner at the house, but here goes my highlights (subjective, of course):

    82T - Rose IA, Parker
    83F - Rice, Carew
    83T - Reggie Super Veteran
83D - Julio Franco (Rookie, right?)
84D - Ryan, Ozzie, Seaver, "Runnin' Reds," Mattingly --- Talk about one hell of a pack!
    84F - Parker
85T - Gwynn (gum bled through)
    85D - Eric Davis, Orel
    85F - Reggie, Schmidt
    86T - Fielder, Braves TL
    86O - Molitor, J. Niekro
    86D - Rickey
    87F - Gooden

I got my packs today. I'm out of town working so I don't have a scanner. My best card was a 89 Score Barry Sanders rookie. It would probably grade an 8. I got a couple Montanas and Marinos but none worth the grading fees. Didn't get much but had fun ripping the packs. Thanks for setting this up.

Unfortunately, my packs didn't yield anything of note either.

Even with the additional packs of 1980 topps, 1982 topps, 1983 topps, and 1983 donruss I added, no rookies whatsoever.

No Henderson, Ripken, Gwynn, Sandberg, Boggs, Mattingly, Clemens, McGwire, Bonds, Griffey......nothing.

Since I have no good cards to post, I thought I'd post my worst card. Condition on my packs was terrible, but the following took the cake. (Honestly, no photoshop here, this is the card!)

Which card is this?? It's right down the middle.

    PSA 9 OC Ken Griffey, or;
    PSA 9 OC Scott McGregor

I should send it in to see. image

Here are the highlights from my football lot. A lot of HOF star power.

Too bad the LT rookie is OC, still a cool card:
    image

The only Payton I pulled was the sticker:
    image

Including the above Payton sticker, the '85 pack was loaded:
    image

LOL Yes, that is a Boz rookie card:

    Another HOF rookie, Michael Irvin:

Including the Largent above the '89 Score pack was loaded with RCs and HOF'ers:

I was feeling pretty good when this was in the first pack of baseball I ripped: image

    image

No more rookies after that though and limited star power. image Not really worth scanning but there was:

'81 Fleer Jim Gantner, Gaylord Perry
'82 Topps Phil Niekro, Carlton Fisk IA
    '83 Fleer Gary Carter
    '83 Donruss Don Sutton
    '83 Topps Bruce Sutter SV
'85 Fleer Pete Rose 4000th Hit
    '85 O-Pee-Chee Wade Boggs
    '85 Topps Tony Perez RB
    '86 Donruss Phil Niekro
'86 Fleer Rod Carew 3000 Career Hits
'86 O-Pee-Chee Goose Gossage, Carlton Fisk
    '86 Topps Don Mattingly AS
    '87 O-Pee-Chee Dave Winfield
'89 Fleer Ryne Sandberg, Wade Boggs AS
'88 Score Nolan Ryan, Phil Niekro
'89 Score Ozzie Smith, Nolan Ryan

Oh yeah, and a 1982 Topps Rusty Kuntz image

There was one bad thing with the baseball packs. I wouldn't hold out any high hopes as far as pulling a Griffey RC out of the high number packs. I found these three cards in the middle of my pack:

    image

There's even a big stain across the front of the '82 Topps Mahler. image

In any case, the thrill of pulling the Ripken RC made the baseball rip well worth it!

The other packs were fine in my opinion, and I've ripped 80's packs from BBCE before and never had a problem. It just looks like there may be a problem with the '89 UD high number packs. I did pull the nice Ripken RC.

I've ripped 80's packs from Steve too. I didn't notice anything wrong with any of them, and really just let out my frustration with the stuff I pulled in the above post. I DIDN'T mean to imply I thought Steve was at fault. I don't know Steve personally, but my email "conversations" with him and the extras he's thrown in for me has always made me feel he's as honest as the day is long. I'm NOT blaming him.

That being said, you're not suppose to get 1982 topps cards in 1989 UD packs, right??

Is it possible to reseal/counterfeit the Upper Deck foil packs?
Could it be possible that the UD factory had an old topps card laying around and just happen to slip into the production line?

One of the most bizarre instances i've seen.

If anyone pulls or already has the following 1982 Topps football cards in any condition I would completely appreciate the help with my set and would pay you for the cards. It is a set I've been working on since I was ten years old and have already received a bunch of help with from board members - thanks again and awesome pulls guys. I've always wanted to open a 1986 Topps football pack, looks fun!

    Got my packs today:

81 Donruss - Sutton, Schmidt MVP
    82 Donruss - Phillies Finest (Rose/Schmidt)
    83 Donruss - Seaver
    84 Donruss - Carew
85 Donruss - Ripken DK (may have to scan this one for opinions), Ryan
86 Donruss - Yikes. Best card was Concepcion. Or Frank White.

88 Donruss - Worse than the '86 pack.
    89 Donruss - Mattingly
    81 Fleer - Willie McCovey
    82 Fleer - Paul Molitor
83 Fleer - Wade Boggs RC (about 70/30 O/C and a soft corner... Waaaaaaamp waaaaah...)
    84 Fleer - Nothing.
85 Fleer - Tug McGraw, Fred Lynn, Jack Morris. Bleh.
    86 Fleer - Jim Rice
    87 Fleer - Canseco, that's about it.
    88 Fleer - Puckett (x2), Ozzie

    83 Topps - Not much.
84 Topps - Gossage, Ozzie AS
    85 Topps - Gossage
86 Topps - Ripken, Dale Murphy
87 Topps - Doc Gooden was the best.
88 Topps - 2 coulda beens, Canseco and Strawberry
89 Topps - Gwynn, Clemens AS, Bonds
    88 Score - Rickey Henderson
    89 Score - Boggs, Ryan
89 Bowman - Mattingly, Jerome Walton RC(!!!)
    89 UD Low - Palmeiro(?)
    89 UD High - Jim Abbott 3D
    86 OPC - Nada.
    87 OPC - Puckett
88 OPC - Maddux (with gum adhered)
    88 Leaf - Bonds, McGwire

All in all, not bad. Only a couple of real duds in the whole run. The 85 Ripken DK is SHARP. I need to get a scan up of that. Anyone have a pop report of that one?

Thanks to leathtech for putting this together. I really enjoyed it. I have also fallen in love with late 80's OPC. Dammit.

All this talk of busting packs has led me to busting some '89 Donruss packs from a case I bought at the show this weekend. I got a Griff on the first pack, and nothing after, go figure. Here is what I bought:
