I started about 1980, and lasted until 1985. I took a break, and restarted in the early 90's for a few years, then stopped again about 1997. I have been back in full steam since 2004.
Early sixties, paper routes, collecting from change. It was so much more fun when stuff could be found in change. If the U.S. and the mint would get their acts together and get the coins circulating that ought to be circulating, and make denominations that would circulate I really think it could be fun again with all the potential varieties that could be out there, and we could attract new, young blood. Just look at all the old farts that responded to this, including me. If it wasn't for the State Quarters I'm not sure if my interest would have ever returned--that after a 20 year lull. Thank goodness I kept all my coins and my Dads from our earlier collecting
1962 at the age of 7. My dad gave me a Whiteman penny folder and a dollar. He said, go buy a couple of rolls of pennies and start filling it in. For the longest time, I thought that as what collecting coins was, finding them. I had every coin in my 1941-1961 folder except the 1955-S. i just couldn't find that one.
<< <i>I started in 1963 at age 7. I collected from age 7-18 (and a little bit in college) and started again 10+ years ago. So I have collected for 21 to 22 years >>
I am nearly an exact match to Sanction, except I chose engineering instead of law school. I started in 1963 at age 7, took a break for high school and college, then started back at about 25 and have collected steadily ever since. I still have my Whitman folders for cent, buffalo nickel, and merc dimes from 1963.

I started collecting as a kid in the late 60's and have not stopped. I grew up in Roxbury MA and there were old houses and fields I would fine mostly Indian head cents. When my father passed away in 1979 I inherited his collection which I was always amazed with. I probably received hundreds of coins, cents - small & large, nickels, , quarters, half dollars, silver dollars, coins from germany & france dating from 1920's - 1940's, german paper money and a coin from the 1600 which I'm not sure what the heck it is. One of these days I will take a picture and share with this forum.
I started around 1976 when I was 6 years old. I collected until 18 or so and then picked it back up when I was stationed at the Naval Post Graduate School in 1994.

In 1955, at the age of 6, I started filling my first Dansco penny board from circulation. The owner of the hobby shop said that the pennies from that year would be scarce, as the San Francisco mint was closing. I've never lost interest in the hobby. The obsolete coins commonly found in circulation included steel cents, buffalo and war nickels, Mercury dimes, stalnding liberty quarters, and walking liberty halves.
Started collecting around 1961, took a good ten year break and then got more serious. Thank goodness I met Julian back then. I let him get the better stuff for me until I knew what I was doing. This was before we had certified coins so he bought them all raw for me at that time. Every coin he bought for me is a high grade PCGS coin now. What superb taste he has. Thanks again Julian.

I'd guess 1968 as an 8 year old until I found girls... then started again about 3 or 4 years ago. I still have many of the coins from when I was a kid.
1966 when I was eight. I took over my older brother's newspaper route and started filling those old blue coin boards with the weekly proceeds. Back then a full week for the Newark Evening News was 65 cents so I had plenty of change to go through.
Stopped collecting once the paper went bankrupt when I was 12. Started up again 22 years later in 1992.
Started 2 years again at the age of 21...wow I feel young now. Started just after I bought my house, I mostly got into coins as an extra income with the help of ebay. Now Im stuck.
It is interesting but not surprising that many of us began the hobby at age 7-10 years. I was no different beginning at a time when many coins that are never seen now in change were common. I still have my original childhood collection including a few coins that are now valued in the $5000-10000 range. Most are simply representative memories of distant joy. This was an age of enthusiastic young collectors. I could spend my Saturdays at the bank going through rolls of coins. Happiness would be the discovery of a new coin to fill a hole in your album, It was easy to tell that your new find was better than it prior fill. Nostalgia? Of course.
