could survive a severe financial crisis or other "unplanned/unforeseen" life situation without having to give even a thought to selling your coins?

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Not me. I'd be selling them off for any serious life threatining or changing event to myself or family.

That's part of why I like this hobby so much. It allows me to enjoy the coins that I love so much while giving me a bit of security that my disposable income is not just "thrown away" money.
  • If things get really bad, there won't be anyone to sell them to.
  • I would be alright in a severe financial crisis, but "unplanned/unforseen life situation" could mean anything. I'd probably have to sell if someone in my family were kidnapped for ransom.

I might have to sell my family to save my coins.

  • It all depends on how long the severe financial crisis is. I could a while before touching my coins, but would eventually have to.

  • Count me out. When times get tough here, I sell what I can when I can. Just because I sell it, doesnt mean I cant buy it again, if I can. Id rather sell some coins, even if I do love them, than live in a cardboard box with a pocketful of coins...

Under a "severe financial crisis", I would have to consider selling anything I own. Car, house, golf clubs, the leather jacket I got for Christmas, etc. EVERYTHING must be considered fair game whether I purchased it for investment purposes or for fun.

If it were a real severe financial crisis, I would go so far as to sell myself.

That is after I got myself into the right plastic and stuck a football sticker on my forehead....

"it is incredibly foolish to have non-expendable funds tied up in coins or any other hobby"

What the heck is the difference between non-expendable and expendable funds?

At what point do you seperate the two? At what point are you comfortable that you do have expendable funds? Personally I think this expendable and non-expendable talk is rubbish and just a bunch of expendable talk.

People spend in the manner they want to spend and thats the bottom line period.

I have a year's worth of salary in short term assets (cash, CD, etc) and I would still look at selling some coins if I needed...I have a wife and a child and they take priority along with my house.
Everything except the house is paid off and I am not looking to buy a new vehicle, though right now would be a great time to do it.

I just bought another (makes 2 total) year of college for my son in the GET program. I was very thankful that I did the GET for him a few years ago instead of the 529 that some folks recommended.

Now, if I had to sell my coins, particularly in a down market like this, it would really suck. I've got some that would still price nicely, and above what I paid, but I have others that I bought because I liked them, but they are somewhat common, and wouldn't price well. They are also not expensive coins but, add them all up, and it is still a nice bit of money.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Then I'd guess that you are more the exception than the rule. Many here say they don't plan to sell, but what kind of personal financial or other life situation could change that. I don't HAVE to sell now, but I could envision circumstances where I might need to.

I could but I might consider looming potential taxation changes as a reason to liquidate sooner than later. Gotta pay for a *&@!ed up economy and bail out those whom IMHO should be waterboarded instead somehow.

No problem. Coins are a luxury item for me. If I need money for living, fixing up the house, a vacation, or a pension plan contribution, that's where it goes (not necessarily in that order). If I can cover all of that, then I have discretionary funds for coins. If not, I don't.
