Should this be reholdered? 1875 Fractional Gold Half

This 1875 Fractional Gold Half (BG-1035, PCGS MS62), has been locked away for awhile and appears to have twisted in the holder.
I'm hoping the insert is soft enough so it won't bend the coin. These things are so small.

This photo is terrible, but you can see how it twisted (left edge now closer to front of slab)...

Then I noticed the bonus at 1:00.

If you need to see the other end of that hair... no don't look!

Seriously, should I have it reholdered... not only for the disgusting factor, but to keep the coin from bending?

Thanks,

bob

  • I do not believe that it needs to be re-holdered due to the fear of bending.
If it bothers you, though, you could spend the few $ for "eye appeal" and maybe they will give you a discount for the bonus!

I will PM you with more.

The coin will not bend because of the insert.

It ain't broke so don't try to fix it.

  • I'd reholder just because that's gross. It's hard to concentrate on the coin. I'd wager it's a beard hair, btw... could be worse. image The twisting is unlikely to do any harm but it seems like it makes it harder to see.

I would probably reholder it. I hate coins that sit crooked in the holder because they are so hard to photograph correctly. The lint doesn't bother me so much. --Jerry

    Oh quit fussing.

The California fractional piece is so small you can't even see it anyway!image

Thank goodness for the holder or you would spend sleepless nights looking for that little piece.

By the way, nice crusty old gold surfaces. Never dipped or fooled with.

The coin looks like a slider (true AU-58) to MS-62 to me. I see friction on the highest points. As such the grade is maxed out, and you could end up with a lower grade if you cracked it out. Bottom line, I don't see any upside upless you send it to a "third world" grading service.

The OP was talking about getting it reholdered---not regraded.

Just curious if anyone ever reads an OP thoroughly and click on the links to back up the facts before replying. image

Not only should that be re-holdered but PCGS should pay for shipping both ways. image

I would send it in for re-holdering immediately.

    Becoka:

A more cost effective approach PCGS should take for such an obvious holdering problem is to allow a collector/dealer to bring it to PCGS at any show that they grade at and allow a reholdering at no charge and to be reholdered within 5 hours as no grading is requested.

This way there is no mailing and minimized handling. By PCGS doing this, it should eliminate any expectation that PCGS should absorb the s&H&I both or even one way.

    Thanks for the responses.

The foreign object is definitely distracting and gross. My real concern was with the coin being so small and thin, that in a few years, it would be cup shaped. I was afraid something related to the storage conditions was warping the insert. It doesn't sound like anyone thinks that's likely.

Not sure if I'll send it in for reholdering or not. Submissions are kind of a hassle. Might depend on how often that hair shows up in my dreams.
