A specialist talked me out of keeping one of my favorite "D" coins (1843-D $5)

RYKRYK Posts: 35,799 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was contacted by a Dahlonega specialist, one whom I do not believe I have ever before met, and he asked to buy a coin from my collection. I have never before had an unsolicited offer like this, but he was clearly a passionate collector, and he "needed" the coin more than me. After some discussion by email, I have agreed to sell one of my favorites for a small premium over what I paid four years ago.

Has this sort of thing ever happened to you?

Here's the photo of the coin, for those who are interested:

Interesting exercise in non attachment. I can't say this has ever happened to me. Sounds kind of flattering, in some ways. I would probably have let go, as you seem to be doing. BTW, nice looking coin. I would give it a sticker imageimage

I am curious how the price was set and whether you checked other recent sales as support, etc.

Very easy. I took the price I paid and added $500 to it. It is a scarce variety, and there is very little price data for it. It is also exceptionally nice for the grade, and if the buyer did not like my price, I was (and still am) more than happy to keep it.

If anyone wishes to know what attractive, original color for a choice AU Dahlonega $5 should look like, this is it.

With all due respect, I do not consider any $5 to be original and attractive until fc confirms it to be true.

RYK, I will peruse your previous coin picture posts and pick out one that I'd like for myself. You cool with that? I don't even need a sticker, as long as it's one of yours.image

If by posting this coin here RYK receives an unsolicited offer higher (perhaps considerably higher) than the agreed "cost + $500" price, will he accept it?

No, a deal is a deal. I would also like to get this coin into this specific collection, which contains a lot of other great Dahlonega coins. I would not want it to get into the "wrong hands" at any price.

I sold one of my favorite coins for this reason, to get it into THE collection it belonged in. I was just happy to 'find' it and own it for a while

I am curious if you used the Bat Phone to call Portland, OR, just to confirm that the price charged was reasonable. Given the recession, I would not want to see RYK leave any scratch on the table.

I do not know. I have not yet received a check. It's going to be hard to replace. imageimage

I will be somewhat amused if RYK finds out tomorrow that the "collector" flipped the coin for a quick score just days after purchasing it. image

Seriously, you did a good thing if the collector truly needed it more than you did.

Nope, this has never happened to me before.

However, there's a coin I purchased from a dealer's personal collection and he's been trying to purchase it back from me for almost a year now. I told him he could have it if he finds a better coin to replace it with. The coin is a variety that's hard to find nice, and I only need it for my date set, so I'm not married to the coin -- just want one as good as or better for my set.

  • Recently I got a rare VAM in this manner. Tracked him down after being the under bidder for a BST/ebay linked auction.

Neat coin, cool to own, and I'm torn between collecting and selling it.

It resides in a lock box so I decided to put a happy price on the coin...

I'm about to bump it up again due to the rareity, replacement costs, and the few times they come up in auction.

If someone pays my happy price it will surely be a true VAM collector (as opposed to a hunter, cherrypicker, flipper) and I'm fine with that...

I would hope the noted VAM collector I bought the coin from would agree...

Well Sir RYK, if he wasn't a specialist before he talked you out of it, he sure was afterward. Nice coin to surrender based on who you've determined has the right hands. What type of hands do you deem the "wrong hands" ?

Sounds like you gave the new owner quite a good deal, when you could have asked an obsence ammount.
