Nolan Ryan Auto Experts needed

I have always liked the 77 Nolan Ryan, but the price seemed a little low. Did I get a good deal or a fake?

I just looked at the seller's closed auctions, he sure sells a lot of ryan autos. Maybe not so good. A guy with an ebay ID express who specializes in ryan stuff wouldn't let legit autos go for a few dollars, would he?

That is what I thought, but I picked up some other unopened packs with Ryan on the top and took a chance on this one. I do not feel great about it. Not only does the "R" look bad, but it is fairly sloppy. Most Ryan autographs I have seen look really clean.

    Here is the sellers response:

I use to pay guys they called runners back in the 80's.These guys would find out what hotels stars where at and get them on the street to sign.So they would sign quick and sometime still walking.I sent some to PSA a few years ago some passed and some did not.I have some Ryans that I got in person I will list them soon a better bet for PSA.Ryan knew me and took his time and signed them nice. When I list them I will put in the listing that I got them in person. Thanks Rich

No one here, especially Stalin, can say with 100% certainty that this auto is real or fake.

What they can do is guess.

I can 100% verify that Ryan did indeed sign sloppy autographs too as I have a few that I obtained as a kid outside the Astros team bus that basically just have Nolan R(scribble for the "yan"). He signed both while walking. I have hundreds of autos that I obtained as a kid outside the locker rooms and buses. Some look great and others are a mess. That auto on that 77 does not look very different from the two sloppy ones that I have. I don't know if it's 100% real but it's definitely possible. But like the others said , spend the extra cash and get a nice , clean one.

Being a Ryan collecter and having seen a few of his autos I agree with killingdream that this auto is sloppy, but it may be real.

I am of the opinion that ,even with psa/dna or spence certification, you never know if an auto is real unless you get it yourself.

Thanks for the input guys. Worst case I am only out a couple of bucks. Might send it in out of curiousity, but I would bet it would not pass PSA. Too many red flags and even if it did not the nicest looking auto anyway. The good news is that I picked up an 1986 topps rack pack and 1987 Donruss Rack with Ryan on the top. Those are what I really wanted.

I just dragged out my Ryan auto ball and to be honest the one in this thread looks

like it. I'll get a pic up.

The ball I have signed was signed in person by arelative of Harry Stevens.

I did not get it myself.

Determining whether the auto is authentic or fake is difficult. The autos on two cards I have contain a space in between his first and last names. Yours does not. Although the R looks shaky, the N looks very similar to the ones I have and many others I have seen. But one other thing stands out for me, is that your auto is very close together, almost squished. Others I have seen look a little spaced out. But like I said, tough to call. I am not a Nolan Ryan auto expert, so consider my post just an opinion.

The OP's autograph is similar to the following one I got in person in 1983. That being said, I just don't like the "R". I'd personally stay away from it, and get a better looking one.

As Nolan Ryan was my fav player...I have at least 10 of his sigs on lithos, balls, ect.
There is no way to say 100% for sure....but the only way that sig could be real if it was done 'on the run.' and he didn't have a flat surface to write on. Other guys have pointed out what doesn't look right.

Your scorecard looks like it was a no hitter?

    Steve

edit to add: ahh it was a 1 hitter.

    Good for you.
  • WinPitcher,

    The scorecard got me thinking...

I wonder if people buy blank scorecards, go to retrosheet for the play by play...and you have an easy no-hitter scorecard. Get it signed, and you have a 'nice' item.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
    Skip

I would think that it would be worth it only if it was within the scorebook magazine that is purchased
