Odd DC D reverse doubling

I bought 5 rolls from the bank today and only opened one and found this;
image
There are five areas of doubling I can find.
1-3) the Ell in Ellington
4) doubled Eb key on the piano
5) below the keys on the piano is a slanted line

Unlike my last struck-through dropped filling `Y` find
this odd doubling DC quarter cant be the only one to exist.
I just cant wait for more people to report it , for anyone that might
think its an April Fools joke thread or something.
Its not. Scout`s Honor and all that.

Overall I would say the coin is in the 65 range actually.
I feel a bit lucky in that it was one of the better examples in the roll.
One or two, normal quarters,in the roll I think is are 66s atleast.
note to self; go back for more rolls tomorrow....

Add a PS on that Note: Pick 19Lyds up about 20 rolls while you're there!

You just made a huge discovery.

I have a feeling this will rank up there with the 1995 DDO Lincoln.

Cam40, If you don't mind me asking, what state do you live in? I want to go buy some rolls on eBay, and I want to make sure they're at least from the same state as yours came from.

    Thanks!

My bank still has plenty of rolls. They're P-mint though.

BTW, most of the State quarter doubled dies are P-mint. This is probably one of the few D-mint.

You should send it to Wexler to have it listed.

That's some strange doubling there! How did only the first three letters get hubbed like that? Possibly there would be remnants of "INGTON" under the piano keys, judging by the angle. The deep incused portion of the keys precludes those letters from showing.

I've only picked up five or so DC quarters so far in Houston, all from the same roll, without any such doubling.
    Are these Ps or Ds?

Ok, I have four rolls coming to me from eBay. Hopefully I'll get extremely lucky!

  • VERY nice find, lucky you - I think you found a major DD there.

Oh and Lee, that's a VERY evil looking doubled eye!
Have bought and sold on BST, many references available when asked.

I think its Tilted Hub doubling similar to what occured on the Minnesota Extra Tree quarters.

    From here:

The area of doubling on all varieties reported thus far represents the virtual dead center of the coin’s design. This is an important key their attribution because specialists believe they are the result of tilted hubs that were seated into proper position during hubbing.

Tilted Hub Doubling restricted to such a small area of design within the center region of the die is possible due to the result of either of two related scenarios.

    1) The hub is backed off after the initial kiss of the hub into a tilted die blank and is then reset properly and hubbed again.

    2) The hub and die blank are titled in relation to each other and are then forced to seat into proper position by hubbing pressure within a split second after the initial kiss of the hub into the tip of the die blank.

The face of a die blank (referred to as a “die block” in Mint jargon) is machined with a slightly conical configuration to aid in the flow of metal during hubbing. This would indicate that the initial kiss of a hub into a die blank would be restricted to this centralized area before continuing on to fill out the rest of the design. During this process the tip of a titled die blank would be positioned slightly off location away from the center of the hub into a different area of design than intended and thus the misplaced area of doubling on the affected die.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

This can't slip down to the third page... I really want to see what Fred has to say about this coin. I agree with Will in his statement that this is one of the biggest finds since the 1995 DDO Cent...

Based on the scan only, and not having the coin
'in hand' to examine, it does appear to be a genuine
Doubled Die Quarter, and a nice one at that!

You need to get the coin to Ken Potter, for example,
so he can examine it. This could be a very significant
    discovery.

I've been in the Die Room at the Phily. Mint, and I think
that the #2 explaination (above message) is probably
    correct.

Can we get other close up scans of other central portions
of the coin - it would be great if there's other doubled
design elements in those central areas.......

Tilted hub doubling. That sounds right from the explaination of what type of hub doubling this is.
I wasnt sure and hadnt yet researched it further. Thanks for doing the leg-work Lee.

So, what exactly would that mean? A true doubling and a chance there are more or would this be the only one?

Anyone have any idea what the die life span might be for State quarters? Would this error probably be limited to just one die??
