Believe it or not, this is my first ever Vatican coin, I've never had one before, even temporarily.

very cool- I think several of the Vatican coins from this time have terrific artistic merit

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • wow that's a great image. I'm guessing that the book is useful!

Beautiful coin -- I really like that design, and the cases they were issued in produce some nice toning. image

Although I never learned Italian and don't collect Vatican medals, I really like its toning!

The mintage figures for Vatican City coins are pretty low. There's no mintage that exceeds a million coins.

    Beautiful coin.

I don't collect them either but would have made an exception for that one.

According to Numismaster, the original mintage was 40,000 pieces. Priced at $50 in UNC.

Vatican pieces in general are quite low mintage. MANY are under 50,000 total pieces. Given that (I would assume) the coinage from the Vatican is widely collected, the prices do seem quite low overall.

Or were most sold as tourist souvenirs rather than circulating coinage, hence survival rates in high grade are quite high?

I'm surprised this is your first oneimage They, along with the 10L, seem to come with some nice toning.

Larry, don't be surprised. How many coins are we going to collect? And while I've had my fair share of newcomers lately like this one, I think it's big time to start thinking about my spring cleaning and what needs to be gone.

Thanks for all the kind comments guys, I'm now waiting to see it in hand too.

I'll bet most of those 40,000 survived in high grades if they weren't melted. I've seen several original sets -- they come with two of each, the 5L and 10L, in a velvet-lined case. The fun is finding ones with really nice toning.

And then time for the summer, fall and winter accumulations image. That is a beautiful coin!
