PCGS cleaned up the verdigris. Thank you!

I hate verdigris. It reminds me of what was becoming of the Statue of Liberty when I lived in NYC in the '70's.

My '26-S Lincoln developed some scattered spots so I sent it to PCGS with a request to review the grade (64RB). The verdigris really wasn't too bad. But I imagined(?) it was growing and developing more over time.

PCGS cleaned it up as best they could, confirmed the grade, reslabbed it and sent it back. (I lost the CAC sticker in the process but never mind that.)

Here are before and after pictures. I think they did a pretty good job. I haven't decided about the somewhat lighter color. What do you think?

Lance.

Is that really verdegris or just the coin toning in the holder?

If it is verdegris, I need to learn to look for that better.

I probably should point out the areas.

Obverse: 12 o'clock in the W of WE, 9 o'clock to the left of LIBERTY
Reverse: 9 o'clock in the sheaf, 3 o'clock, to the left and right of the sheaf, rim at 5 o'clock and 10 o'clock

Other little spots scattered about. Again, nothing really big and ugly.

I understand PCGS has a "Spot Review" service, but this sounds like free coin conservation. I thought it was only to remove PVC and other harmfull stuff from coins that developed ofter teh coin was graded or developed after the coin was graded.

It usually takes considerable time but other than that PCGS has top notch customer service.

I like the after pics better, they did a good job.

Oh, I see it now. It does appear to have some specs of PVC on the coin.

I also had my 26 S sent in for grade review. I did not get the upgarde, but the coin is cleaner than when I sent it in. Same thing when I sent in two Mattes - one did upgrade but both got a quck bath. Just acetone folks so do no freak out.

I called this verdigris because of telltale bright green spots. I'm told if the perimeter of the spot is a lighter color it is active and there's more reason for worry.

Someone else said PVC. I usually think of PVC as a haze. But does PVC develop into green spots over time? A quick acetone bath usually cures PVC haze. Is it the right treatment for verdigris as well, and/or advanced PVC?

I'm just happy to see it didn't come back in a "genuine" holder with questionable color.
  • Be thankful it did not get downgraded... a seldom talked about risk that you take when sending in for spot review.

No kidding! Would have been some irony, with the CAC sticker and all.

Of course a downgrade would have meant the grade guarantee kicks in and a cash payout.

    I think 64 is a little generous.

I wonder if you were to crack it out and resubmit it now, Would it Grade or BB for cleaning?
    Just a thought.
