Grade the 1965 SMS Kennedy...

Took a visit to the local B&M today. Nothing real exciting so I picked up a 1965 SMS Kennedy for $10 as a courtesy purchase. I think that the coin has eye-appeal.

What would you grade it by the pics and is $10 about right for this coin?

    66
  • 66. Some hits in prominent areas.
  • $10 is probably a little on the expensive side--often times even fairly high grade 40% Kennedies just trade for melt. Nice coin though.
  • Hairlines and what appears to be white haze on the reverse might pull this coin down to as low as PCGS MS65. One other thing, as on any JFK if you are to get the
lofty grades, you have to have accented hair.

MS65. You could have probably bought a complete 1965 SMS set for under $10.00. Its only $10.00 so you couldn't do too bad.

    Please elaborate? image

Since the only Accented Hair Kennedy I am aware of or that has been documented is the 1964 Proof coin.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Ok, so basically these are worth melt.

Interesting but no big deal and absolutely worth $10 for the education.

How do you know that it is an SMS coin and not a regular business strike? I personally
have no clue other than it appears to be very sharply struck and has die polish lines.

Absolutely no haze, artifact of the photographic lighting.

A lot of the time you cant tell. Yours looks a lot like a business strike. Most of the time they just look too good to be a business strike becasue better care was used with the SMS coins. I once had a 1966 business strike that graded MS66. Many thought it was an SMS. PCGS thought it was a business strike. The price difference between the two is thousands. Someone once told me that PCGS had some method of determining if a coin is SMS. I'm not sure about that, though.

Its easy to tell when you get a fresh contrasted cameo from 1965-1967 considering they didnt have proof sets in those years.

The rims on SMS coins are sharp. if you roll them in your hand you can feel the difference between an SMS and business strike coin. Just like proofs.

    Try it!
