2009 Lincoln's - Possible new modern rarity?

ManorcourtmanManorcourtman Posts: 8,175 ✭✭✭✭✭
With four designs planned for 2009 is it possible due to lack of commercial demand the mintages on the 09 Lincolns could be very, very low? If the Banking system has no need for new cents there is no reason for the US Mint to fire up the presses. After watching the demand for the Log Cabin issue go through the roof due to lack of supply I am starting to wonder if we are upon a new modern rarity so to speak. I have heard of zero Denver issue coins and the Philly coins seem to have all come from DC and the opening ceremony in Kentucky. The Mint has promised to put out 2 roll sets but as usual their promises have been unkept. I was thinking the GEM Business strike examples would be real winners down the road but know I wondering about limited mintages overall. In 2 months when the second version of the 09 Lincolns come out I believe the first version will be history. Thoughts?

Wanna bet there will be at least one cent available for every living man, woman, and child in this country for EACH of the four reverse designs. Steveimage

there only seems to be a shortage now because of the limited release SO FAR........trust me, the mint will churn out plenty of these before it's all said and done.......small cents of U.S. origin have a history of being hyped (pre-internet, no less)

a look at how the first 'small cents' were received:

    >>When the Flying Eagle cents were first released on May 25, 1857, more than a thousand people wound around the mint building to convert their old Spanish coins and large coppers. Within the mint's courtyard was erected a temporary, wooden structure with two teller windows. Above each window was a sign reading, respectively, "cents for cents" and "cents for silver." The Philadelphia Bulletin described the scene: "Every man and boy in the crowd had his package of coin with him. Some had their rouleaux of Spanish coin done up in bits of newspaper or wrapped in handerchiefs, while others had carpet bags, baskets and other carrying contrivances, filled with coppers-'very cheap and filling,' like boarding house fare."

A secondary market for the small cents developed immediately, some people even paying a premium right on the grounds of the mint building itself. Soon enough, though, the "nicks" became commonplace and. by 1859 when the Indian cent design was introduced, the Mint had struck a total of 42,050,000 cents with the Flying Eagle design, more than enough for anyone who wished to have multiple examples. Snowden was successful in driving out the now-demonitized Spanish coins, and by 1859 it was estimated that some $2 million worth of the foreign silver pieces had been recoined into U.S. subsidiary coinage>>

Lots of cents were minted in the 30's but were not distributed until years later. I think we will see the same thing with the lincolns. Eventually the govt. will be forced to dispose of them somehow, someday.

Where must I go, who must I call, what must I do to find out where I can get a roll or two of the new Lincoln Penny P/D?

Checked with my bank, but was told they have so many pennies on hand from people bringing in OLD pennies, they never have a need to order any from the Mint...

This is how murphey's Law actually goes for coins:

Those coins that one stocks up on in vast numbers, will

    in truth, be absolutely worthless.

Those coins that are passed over as trivial ,will soon

be regarded as having vast value to spare.

According to this a penny has about ten times more zinc than
    is needed for zinc poisoning.

It can kill small mammals including babies if fully digested.

I don't think they are truly going to be raritys...they are just rare now. I have not been able to find any yet, and I have been trying! I'm not however going to pay stupid money on ebay for them either.

We need to pray that Wall Street Banks don't snatch up the entire mintage of these new Lincoln Log Cents. I would hate to see them prey on us Coin Collectors with some insane can't-miss investment racket.
  • My parents were up in the DC area last week and I forgot to ask them to look for the new Lincoln's for me.

How can a coin that is minted in the hundreds of millions be considered "rare" in the year of its production?

It may not be widely available yet, it may be hyped by the hucksters who create the buzz about the coin, it may be snapped up at large premiums by "savy" colletors who just have to be the first on the block to have the newest mint product, but is it truly "rare"?

    Not.

I think it's like last years Nickel 345.60 Mil and only 2@ MS66FS $500.00 a coin what do you think a roll will go for 5 years from now? and if the mint dose not sell the Business strike like they did not last year you are at the mercy of the dealer/ fliper. image

These Lincolns will be rare like the UHR $20 will be more than just bullion.

In spite of all this, I'm looking forward to receiving my UHR this Monday. When and if I ever see a Lincoln Log Cent - I could care less.
