1999-W $5 Gold Washington

Why doesn't this coin go for a higher price. It has a low mintage and a great design. Just curious, opinions please.

Compared to other gold commem's of the time (BU Robinson, Capitol Vistor Center, Smithsonian, etc. ), it is not a low mintage.

    I love the design.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I've always looked at this as one of the finest newer issues...a beautiful design.

  • Greetings, all. This is one of my absolute favorite of the modern commems; the Proof version is very impressive. BTW, this gold coin featured the design proposed in 1931 by Laura Fraser during a competion held to commemorate George Washington's bincenntennial birthday. What is really cool about this, is that had she won, this would have become design on the quarter we use today!

I too like the design, but think that it does not score any points evidently with the buyers of it and the demand is consequently lower. It certainly has a much better appearance than the accepted Flanagan designs (or rather adopted since they were not the accepted versions initially).

I rather like the unc. version as the rev. reminds me of classical gold.

I suppose the design is ok except that everytime I see this sucker, I can't help but think ole George is facing the wrong direction??

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
  • probably because it reminds people of the quarter design too much. i like it personally.

41,693 is a somewhat high mintage for a modern gold coin compared to the commemorative series. Also look at the gold proofs released in 2008, the 4 buffalo proof coins are mintages of around 13,000 to 19,000 which is less than half to a third of this mintage.
