I agree with the following quote from the article....

"Although the surge in coin demand is a bullish signal for gold prices, the fact that mints cannot match demand means that the potential extra consumption does not push spot prices higher, but just drives premiums above normal levels."

  • QPA Ive always agreed with that statement also.

Premiums are a factor of a shortage of product... a shortage of small gold pieces. There is no shortage of gold. there is a shortage of small gold pieces that consumers wants to buy.

Anyway, what about the premiums these days?

Depending on what u are purchasing ... Apmex is asking anywhere from $39.95 to $59.95 over spot for the 1 oz Credit Suisse bars.. ( I can't afford the kilo bars ... $14.95 per oz over spot)
    AGE's $59.95 over spot ...

Occasionally APMEX has a sale for their 1 ozers as low as $29.95 - $39.95 over spot

I would think that 5% - 7% over spot is normal now a days...

Kilos are very popular these days among the heavy hitters. Had a guy pick up 19 of them yesterday that he ordered last Friday.

At one time, I agreed with that. The older I get, the less I trust the government agencies to tell the truth about anything. We simply don't know what's happening with physical gold (or silver), although the kilo premiums on physical delivery probably get as close to reality as we can expect to know.

Premiums for 1/10th oz to 1 oz gold used to range from 15% to 3% on AGEs. I would guess that the premiums are alot higher right now.

I am reasonably sure that platinum production has hit "peak platinum" and that being the case, unless new deposits of gold are found, that may be the case for gold as well, since the methodology for the richest deposits is the same. Gold is a more common occurance though, so a price increase in gold will be sure to bring more production online.

Tulving is a good place to keep an eye on premiums. Also, there is a website that someone listed here that is very good:
