Smitty, I believe the bottom one was carved by a woman from our locality. She has retired from making them as a result of arthritis. I believe we have a few of her pieces as well.
Here's mine. Wish the artists were more forthcoming on who they were or if they signed these somehow. Would be cool to see multiple works from several artists. Found this in a collection of junk silver from my Great Aunt's estate.
I bought this hobo nickel at a coin show today.............
I paid $8.00 for it. The buffalo nickel that the artwork was carved on does not appear to be in the greatest shape and that is why it looks "dark" in the picture. I tried taking the best picture that I could of this hobo nickel.

I bought this hobo nickel today at a flea market.........................
It is a "Dog" hobo nickel that was created by Keith Pedersen. The reverse was carved out instead of the front of this buffalo nickel. I paid $36.00 for it. The "KP" on the "dog tag" stands for Keith Pedersen.

I know where an 'old' (very old) hobo encampment was located.... it is still in the woods, quite isolated (but not far from the railroad tracks. One day I will MD that area.... maybe, just maybe, find an original. Cheers, RickO
The Original Hobo Nickel Society collects ongoing research on hobo nickel carvers. Part of the group's efforts include matching up "maverick" works with their creators, by classifying distinguishing design elements (e.g., a recurring "peanut" ear, a particular type of shirt collar).
Check out the OHNS at www.hobonickels.org. The magazine is one of the best in numismatics, and by itself is well worth the price of admission.
I bought this today at a coin show and I paid $8.00 for it. The artist is unknown. On the front of nickel, the Indian Head "hat" says "Show Me The Money". The nickel was not in the greatest of shape when it was carved out. I did not find many hobo nickels at the coin show.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I recently came into a quantity of Hobo Nickels...about 50 of them. About half of them are CS'd "J. Allen," so I know those are modern, but is there any way to tell about the others? As you can guess, I know nothing about Hobo Nickels. I've spent a little time on the OHNS site... Here are a few pics. The last one is nearly entirely J Allen pieces.
Thanks for any info!

Never view my other linked pages. They aren't coin related.
The first one is a "Baseball Player" hobo nickel. It was carved out of a 1935 Buffalo nickel and it was signed by J Press.
The second one is a "Female Player" hobo nickel. It was carved out of a 1936 Buffalo nickel and it was signed on the reverse by J Allen.
I bought this late last week as a lot on ebay and I paid a total $33.00 for these two hobo nickels.
