Million Dollar Maple Leaf!!

A little out of my range, but a few of you on here should consider this one... it has a low mintage

http://apmex.com/milliondollarcoin/Default.aspx

The largest and most expensive gold bullion coin in the world is for sale and YOU can purchase it today from one of the nation’s best and most trusted precious metals dealers. The current gold value of this coin alone is over 3.1 million dollars. Offered at only 5% over spot, this coin is sure to turn the heads of investors and collectors alike.

The American Precious Metals Exchange (APMEX), of Edmond, Oklahoma, is proud to announce that it has been chosen to sell one of the few specimens of the world’s largest gold coin.

Comprised of .99999 percent fine gold bullion, this coin weighs 100 kilos, about 220 pounds. The Royal Canadian Mint placed a face value of $1,000,000.00 Canadian Dollars on this coin. This Canadian Maple Leaf coin is the largest, purest, and highest denomination coin ever minted.

The coin features Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, and Canada’s national symbol, the maple leaf, on the reverse. This extremely rare coin is one of only five minted by the Royal Canadian Mint.

Although this coin gave the Royal Canadian Mint bragging rights for making the world’s largest and purest gold coin, the new owner will have significant ownership bragging rights as well.

If you have serious inquiries about the sale of this coin, you can contact APMEX directly at milliondollarcoin@APMEX.com Be sure to include your contact information, so an APMEX representative can respond to you about the arrangements.

I would love to see the slab that one goes into!!!

What, they don't have troy Kilograms?

It would be interesting to see the die and press used to mint those. I wonder how many strikes and at what pressure it took.

Beat me to it! I wonder if PCGS would design a custom slab for this coin if someone who did own one asked? That would be quite a chunk of plastic, and hard to grade too I suppose with all of that surface area.

Thats a fairly impressive piece but destined for some expensive storage facility!

I mean, its not like you could just whip this thing out to show to your dinner guests!

Perhaps the bankers of the world that are buying up all the gold should consider this one? After all with gold about to "go through the roof" and all.............

220 pounds of bling would look good in the WhiteHouse , if you asked me.
Maybe the U.S. Treasury could purchase it and make some UHRs. for us poor folk.

    In other words, Lee...

Let's put this on the ballot image
I'll bet "We the People" would vote to own it.

BTW, how many of these were made? According to the RCM:

"The 100-kg, 99999 pure gold bullion coin with a $1 million face value was originally conceived as a unique showpiece to promote the RCM's new line of 99999 pure one-ounce Gold Maple Leaf bullion coins. After several interested buyers came forward, the RCM decided to make a very limited quantity available for sale."

This was back in May of 2007.

"Offered at only 5% over spot..."

IMO they would be lucky to get 3%.

    I believe it was cast.

Teletrade had one for sale a few years ago, and I don't think it sold. I wonder if this is the same specimen. 5% over spot is a lot of juice on $3 million in bullion.

Teletrade offered one in 2007. There's a cool photo of Ian Russell holding a "tiny" one-ounce Maple Leaf near the monster 100 kilo coin. The photo was taken (by me) at a Brink's facility in Los Angeles. Notice the nearby armed guards.

Do you think it would make it into a PCGS First Strike slab?
  • I wouldn't buy it unless they threw in a bezel and a thick chain so I could wear it around my pencil neck!

No need to slab it. Just use a counterstamp to verify its gold content.
  • Good Afternoon Everyone.
Thought I'd jump in and answer a few questions.

The Million Dollar Coin is $1 Million Canadian Dollars Face Value. As of this post ( 12:30pm CST 02/26/09) the price of the coin is $3,185,357.70 including the 5% premium over spot per ounce.

The coin is 19.1 inches in diameter, 1.1 inches thick and is one of only 5 coins minted by the RCM. It tips the scales at 100 Kilos (about 220 lbs or 3215 troy ounces).

If you all have any additional questions, feel free to PM me and I will do my best.

How does using a counterstamp verify a coin's gold content?

I remember when I took the one I OWN down to my local grocery store in CANADA... I had it in my bright red wheelbarrow.... I walked around the store with many looks from customers and eventually found what I was looking for. A gallon of milk, a box of donuts,a 2 liter of coke, and a 5 pound back of carrots. I took all my items up to the cashier and after her ringing me up for a total $8.43 I heaved my gold coin up on the counter and asked for change....

well to sum up- she didnt take my coin but I did learn one valueable lesson-
lifting 220 pounds of ANYTHING can give you a HERNIA!!!

    Good luck to the winner!

You would need about a 100 inch rear to have 21 inch pockets. Quite a few guys i see at the local shows would qualify. Of course the extra 220 pounds would probably push their hover rounds beyond the breaking point. Some of them could probably afford to upgrade their steel oxygen bottle to a lighter titainium model to cut the overall weight down.
