Hope the summer wrapped up nicely for everyone. The weather in Brooklyn is cooling down a bit, so it's definitely feeling like fall...which I guess means that baseball's almost over...boooooo.
Anywho, I just wanted to share stuff that I got back from the photographers this week, the majority of which were color studies. It was a pretty busy month as far as those were concerned.
The majority of them are spoken for, but there are still some of them available on eBay.
I just wanted to let you know that you are in heavy rotation on Fox News Extra in Latin America. I see you featured a number of times every month when I am in theater.
For those unfamiliar, some global channels don't run commercials during commercial breaks... instead creating vignettes to run in their place.
Fox created a very flattering one on Graig that well highlights his incredible talent. Unfortunately, I couldn't find it on Youtube, but did find the local Fox affiliate that did the original story that was re-packaged for international distribution.
Alas, I've not seen you on in other markets outside of the Americas yet... perhaps because baseball is relatively popular in many parts of Latin (especially Central) America whereas not so much in the Netherlands, India, China, and the like? Did you see a notable increase of sales from Latin America after this piece... I imagine you had to, no?
Anyhow, I thought you might get a kick out of knowing that... I certainly would were it me!
As fabulous as ever. I really love the attention to detail (the specifics of the uniforms, the signage in the parks) that you always show. I particularly love the Banks and the Fleet Walker pieces here.
GDM67, thank you so much for the kind words. I'm thrilled I was finally able to do a painting of Fleet!! I just wish there were more images of him out there - and in better quality!!
Snorto, sorry it took so long for me to see this - am I really playing out in Latin America?? Where are you located? I actually didn't think that that FOX spot got picked by too many places (especially since I only saw it on two or three FOX affiliates), so I figured it just kinda died. Well, I guess here in America, it did. But if it's actually be shown out there, that's awesome. Actually, it's amazingly 'effin awesome.
To be honest, there haven't been any sales from people living in Latin America. I had always hoped for a few at some point, especially with my desire to paint some of the heroes from the region - people like Marichal and Clemente, specifically (actually, I have a color study of the latter that's been sitting on eBay for months, and I'm pretty surprised it hasn't had any bites). I also REALLY would love to tackle some of the old Cuban League ballplayers, but I feel like those would just be for myself. I just haven't had much (if any) interest in those fellas. There's an unfinished portrait of Jose Mendez that's been sitting in my studio for years. I'd love to complete it, but since it's not something that anyone's ever really expressed a desire to see, the commission work just has to come first. It also sucks that I post players like him on Facebook and it seems like nobody is interested in baseball from that part of the world.
Orrrrr, maybe I should stop complaining and just be grateful for any of the attention I receive from everyone. And I really am. I'm incredibly lucky. But I guess I just want to set that bar higher, create better work, and try to illustrate a more diverse tapestry of the game's history.
It's been quite some time since I posted on this thread, so I thought I'd update y'all with some of the color studies that have come out of the studio the past few months:
Cap Anson, 1875
Jim Devlin, 1876
Christy Mathewson, 1909
Babe Ruth, 1920
Josh Gibson, 1945
Gil Hodges, 1948
Ken Griffey, Jr., 1990
As per usual, feel free to share any questions, problems, critiques or suggestions.
As many of you know, Graig has some of his work depicted on baseball cards for Topps' 150 Year of Baseball...since I can't afford one of his original pieces at this time, I thought getting some fo the cards would be just as cool. Enjoy.
