<< <i>I think I've only posted three "group break" propositions in the 3 years or so I have been a member here so I would hope I am not over my limit. What I was talking about was the interest I have in modern cards. Yes, I collect vintage, and yes I have posted some of my vintage finds and shared some of those interests that I have... yet I also have interest in modern cards and "I feel the need" to be able to share that part of my hobby as well.

I realize this will bring on far more criticism than it's worth (and will eventually get the thread locked) but I guess I'm a glutton for punishment so I'll say it... more times than not this board is patroled by such a "good old boys' network that if you post any kind of a new interest or heaven forbid you are a new member to the board you are met with so many "unkind or smart alec remarks" that many don't bother continuing to post. I have had some good exchanges and made deals with several great people on this board so I don't want to over-generalize but compared to the other boards I have belonged to this one is by far the most "aggressive" as far as certain members who go out of their way to make other members feel unwelcome unless they are one of the "regulars" on the site. That's one mans opinion and you can take it for what it's worth (insert joke here) but I'll continue to post my hobby interests not only because it belongs here but also if for no reason other than to not let the trollers chase yet another collector away from a site that can often times be a joy to read as I like to share in other peoples "finds" as well as learn from some of you who are far more knowledgable than me regarding vintage material.

    OK...let the barage begin! >>

You realize that the only reason people give you any grief is because you come here asking for us to pay for your entertainment.

If you came and only posted scans of cards without asking people to pay for your pleasure, you would get MUCH different replies. In Fact you would be contributing.

Try standing outside a movie theater around a group of people and say, hey guys, instead of the 6 of you buying tickets for $10ea, just chip in $1.75ea and buy me a ticket. I will watch the movie.. and come out and tell you ALL about it!

We can argue the "entertainment value" of group breaks all day but that's been done before. I disagree that it's purely my entertainment value versus others in the break but also realize opinions differ so I won't try to convince you or anyone else otherwise. I also don't think 3 group break proposals in 3 years constitutes being a pest about it.

My comments were not regarding just a few comments in this one thread...im my mind it's an on-going issue I see in many many threads made by other collectors as well. I just feel it's a shame so I thought I'd speak my piece.

<< <i>Some nice cards even though this represents only the cream of the crop. That Ben will get serious money, much more than any one person paid. A few weaker
cuts, all those guys have on card sigs. The Dimaggio is nice also, even though the design is bad, donruss has assured themselves that they can produce any
card or any player with their back log of stickers.

After the first couple of cards, the drop off will be huge, even Montana autos don't get alot now a days. That Ben is crazy. Thanks for sharing, was everyone in
    the rip happy?

    Kevin >>

The top slot was priced at $610 and he already sold the card (he gets to keep the other cards in the box) for $2500. We are still drafting but so far the feedback by the participants have been great. We'll probably even try it again in a couple months (don't worry I won't bother trying to recruit here). Prime Cuts was a big disappointment as I had an earlier 5 box break of it that blew this 18 box portion away so I am contemplating changing up the BB portion of the product if we try it again. I also agree the JoeD auto is a terrible design.

Cool cards, I like seeing the breaks. It is not my thing to rip high end modern packs but I do like watching it.

I actually missed this thread. Had I not, I probably would have been in. I like the idea.

I typically bust a case of Allen and Ginter every year so I get my break fever done there. I like this concept more from the investment side. Whoever had the #1 pick likely doubled their money with the Big Ben card.

PM me if you get a chance next time you have a break like this.
    Currently Buying:
2004 Tommie Harris SPX Printing Plate (White Whale will pay top $$$)
1994 SP Football Die Cuts PSA 10s
  • After reading all this, I have a really off-the-wall question. Is this really legal?

Well that was a good pay day for the top guy, at 600+ per bust, he would probably lose money 9 times out of 10. I really can't think of anyone bigger to pull
a three patch auto 1/1 of than Big Ben. I'm glad that this worked out for you. Was everyone happy?

Interesting stuff, thanks for the scans and the explanation of how it works.

A couple questions (just because I'm curious): Do you guys bid on each draft pick, or is the price predetermined? Also, won't the last guy get f***d like a prison punk every single time you do one of these? I don't do a lot (OK, I don't do anything) with modern boxes, but it seems like there almost always has to be at least one box that holds about $7 worth of cards.

No, it isn't. Lawmakers are working tirelessly to enact laws against this sort of thing. They have nothing better to do.

Boo, you're not listening. The top guy scored $2500 for his $600 investment. That's all you need to know.

The slot prices are predetermined and people sign up for the slots that they choose to. The products we include are only National Treasures and Exquisite Football and Prime Cuts Baseball so there are very very few "dud" boxes if any. Granted not every box will yield a couple hundred $$ in cards but the lower slots pay much less that it costs to buy any of these boxes. The lowest slot paid $115, $120, $125 and so on so with the lowest priced product going for $230 to buy it by yourself they are only paying half of the normal per box price so even they are happy... otherwise they wouldn't sign up for that slot. Will everyone be happy by the end of the draft...obviously I can't guarantee that but with the structure of the break I think it's safe to say more will be satisfied than in most group breaks I've seen simply due to the varying costs based on how high or low you pick.

That Emmitt Smith Patch/Auto card is really cool.

For collectors that are into numbers...it's numbered #22/22 which adds a little to it as well. I think that's my favorite even though I like the 1/1 logo hit as well.

How about you list how much each person paid and what cards they got for each break.

    Looking forward to your response.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

How hard would it be to buy 2 boxes of exquisite and film both and keep the one with the Big Ben 1/1? You could manipulate everything and people could never prove otherwise. I can think of many other ways to absolutely rig this thing and rob everyone blind, but that seemed like the easiest.
  • jswietonjswieton Posts: 2,870 ✭✭✭
Cool cards! keep up the scans. Would it be possible for you to list what cards went to what possition in your "draft". I am just curious to see what cards went to what place in the draft.
  • It seems like the "in" thing to have a hobby shop or similar break the box that they purchased and have it posted on YouTube. I dont understand the thrill of it myself. As far as ripping people off, I think he does it on Live Web cam or something and then posts it for people that missed the live show. I could only think of a few shocking things to do on live web cam, never mind with the cards.

Someone else tried this and was CRUCIFIED for it. The guy had all his personal info put on the internet and probably got some knocks on the door
late at night, I don't think anyone is stupid enough to screw with that many collectors, especially when there is that much money involved!

Nice Emmitt, that is going to get a nice number.

It was brought to my attention that there were some unanswered questions from this thread. Pretty impossible to go through all 39 boxes so I will post a link to the website where we organize the breaks. On that page you will find a link to the "Break Thread" to see the pricing structure of all 39 slots as well as the "Draft Thread" where you can see who drafted what boxes.
