Troy vs Avoirdupois

I was checking the weight of some scrap using a Avoirdupois scale from the post office, and came up with 1 pound, 10.2 oz.

Until I find a Troy scale, is there any other way to convert Avoirdupois to Troy weight?

While I'm at it, any recommendations for a good place to buy the scale?

One troy ounce is 480 grains, and one avoirdupois ounce is 437.5 grains, so to convert from avoirdupois to troy ounces multiple by a factor of (437.5/480).

  • Ok, lets see if I got this right.
1 lb 10.2 oz =26.2 oz which would be 23.88 troy oz?

    Yes, that's it!

  • Troy oz = 31.103 grams
    Av oz = 28.35 grams

There are 454 grams in an Av pound.

Armed with this info, you should be able to do ANY conversion you need.

    Here you go

    24 Grains = 1 pennyweight
    20 pennyweight = 1 troy oz
    480 grains = 1 troy oz
    12 troy ozs = 1 troy lb

    1 troy oz = 31.104 GRAMS
    1 pw = 1.552 GRAMS
    Hope it helps

    I do everything in grams.
    Just get a gram scale.
  • Yes, that does help, it is exactly what I was looking for.
I'll have more accurate info of what is sent in for melt during the time it will take to find a scale for troy weight.
    Thanks to all.

  • Hi,

Weights and measures provide quite a fascinating topic, and as you are discovering are inherently important to precious metals and coins. Also, the relationship of weight and fineness/purity to carat and karat is a good topic to become familiar with.

I’ve gathered some important information here (go to the bottom of the page):

As far as the scale, most are calibrated to grams since that is the most common unit of measurement on the planet. We use, and are happy with, one made by Pelouze, accurate to 1/10th of a gram. It does however have a 5kg upper limit.

    Enjoy.
