USPS says it was delivered?

I recently won a Heritage Auction and it was shipped Jan 28. I just tracked the package and it said was delivered Jan 30 and it lists my city and zip. No signature. I don't have the package, was never delivered to me. I just call Heritage and they said I should check with the post office, I callled the post office and they're saying it was delivered. What should I do?

Wait for Heritages response. If Heritage says you got the coin go away then contact your cc company and explain it to them and they should do a chargeback.
  • They probably delivered it to the wrong address.
Think of it as doing your part getting someone started in coin collecting.
It wasn't very expensive, was it?

  • It was about $86 for a 1952 S Half, while its not a huge amount I don't want to loose $86. This happened to me about a year back also, a gameboy that I ordered on Ebay and I took a hit of about $75. I didn't even know that Heritage doesn't require signature. Usually all my coin orders comes sig require.

Contact Heritage again. Verify shipping address.

Print out the info, go to the post office and ask them to look for the package (or at least get a description of how it was mailed).

I was a little ticked-off at Heritage when I paid for shipping and insurance for a coin, but it arrived uninsured with no delivery confirmation.

I had this exact same thing happen to me in 2006,
I lost the coin and no money was ever refunded
because the USPS said it was delivered.
I fought with them for a long time they thought
I was trying to pull a scam, the best I can figure
is postal carrier put it in the wrong mail box
or they took it themselves. I was out five hundred
dollars because the USPS showed it delivered.
I checked tracking #s and was delivered but I never
received it..dealing with the post office was a nightmare.
I eventually lost. I kept trying all angles still with no help.
    sucked to say the least...

Its not uncommon for Heritage to deliver stuff that just gets dumped in your mailbox. Does DC note the time it was scanned? If so does it jive with your normal mail delivery time?

Shipped Jan 28 and delivered Jan 30 I find this hard to believe unless you live across the street from Heritage.

Not really. They mostly use priority which is generally 2 days and depends when it gets picked up in Dallas.

If it was shipped Delivery Confirmation, the PO can tell you WHO delivered it and WHEN (exact time) it was delivered. That will help to pinpoint where on the route it was or was not delivered.

If you do a charge back, Heritage might ban you from any future auctions. They might also share your name with other coin auction firms. You need to ask yourself if it's worth it.

  • I usually get mail between 12-2pm and this was delivered after 3pm so its not far off. I have to go to the PO to pick up a package today so I'll check with them at the same time.

Hopefully the person will return it to me when they realise its not for them. But in case, the PO stick to what their system says, what are my chances of recovering the funds?

Good luck recovering the funds. Was the package insured? The post office is almost certainly a dead end. The same thing happened to me, and their response was to send packages with a signature required.

The USPS may be the culprit, my personal opinion is that Heritage is ultimately responsible, the same way I feel about any seller. The buyer's part of the deal is completed when they pay in full for the item. The seller's is complete once the item is safely in the hands of the buyer. Insurance is included on everything I sell over $30, not to protect the buyer, but to protect me agains scams.

If they ship to me it will not get here in that time frame for sure. When a package hits Oregon its atleast two days in Oregon to get to my section of the state. Of course with some states back east this is probably different because they are only as big as one of our counties.

Anyway it was just a observation from this neck of the woods.

There are a few things Heritage could care less about you. Poor photography for intenet bidders, no return policy and now, they don't care if you receive your coin. Obviously, they don't even care if you're a satisfied custumer of theirs. image We even have HeritageGreg chiming in here every once in awhile but mums the word, right Greg!

  • Just got back from po. As far as they are concerned it was delivered since they have delivery conf. This is crazy. my mom said it was a different delivery guy the past few days. So I'm sure he must have delivered elsewhere by mistake. I'll contant heritage again tomorrow and see what they can do.

Delivery Confirmation is nothing more than the action of the numbnuts carrier scanning a barcode label on the article, wherever and whenever the point of delivery was, even if it was not the correct destination. DC in the strict sense of its use only confirms that the article is out of the carriers possession. Nothing more, nothing less. TOTALLY USELESS to the addressee.

I think others have posted here that DC does not necessarily preclude one from successfully filing a claim tho Heritage would have to do it in this case. Unfortunately for what they charge for shipping, Heritage can't/won't provide anything better than the service that just dumps the package into your mailbox.

  • Im notout as much as you are , but this happened to me in the last few weeks.

I bid and won a ike proof on ebay. The guy shipped Dev.Con. to my po box.

Never received it but the DC shows that it was put in my po box on a certin date and time.

I never ever saw it, ask them how put it in my box, said I don't know, it was scaned and placed in your box on this date and time.

I ask them could they check the back to see if it was on the floor or somewhere else.

Said it would do no good, that if it fell on the floor they would have put it back in my box.

So I just left, chalked it up to, What Ever.

  • - Priority mail is not trackable.

    - If showing as delivered chargeback will be denied.

I suggest for valuable coins use USPS Express mail which is 1 - 2 days guaranteed AND trackable.... FedEx and UPS have similar services.
  • So one should pay $17.50 to Express Mail an $80 coin?????? Makes sense for a high ticket item

Wouldn't it be more cost effective just to get USPS Postal insurance for a couple of bucks??? At least you would have some potential for reimbursement

In this case the shipping choice was made by Heritage. Nothing pisses me off more than people wasting $$ on excessive shipping, unless of course they are paying for it.

I've sent close to 4000 packages by USPS with delivery confirmation in the past 2 years and not a one has been misdelivered or lost. knockonwood. --Jerry

edit to add: upgrading these to priority would have probably cost about $3 each, or $12,000. adding tracking/signature confirmation to each one would be $1.80 each or $7200.

That's pretty much the truth of the matter, but just try convincing buyers of that.

Whoever it was at the post office who developed and marketed this "product" should win a prize- not since Priority Mail has there been a service offered by the USPS which appears to promise so much more than it actually delivers (no pun intended).

For the record, I think the post office typically does a good job- I just think the general public has misconceptions about what some of USPS's services (Delivery Confirmation and Priority Mail, for example) actually provide, and the post office doesn't seem to be too keen on disabusing them of those notions.
  • It was sent with only delivery confirmation not signature confirmation.

I spoke with Heritage today, the rep said they're only resposible for handing the goods to the carrier and that their terms says that once its in the hands of the carrier they're not liable. And apparently the package was not insured either. It was shipped Flat rate Priority Mail and they charged me $8.35 for shipping. She said none of the managers are available at the moment and she'll get them to call me once they're available to see what they can do. This sucks.

  • Its past 3pm now and so far nobody called me yet. If I don't hear from them today I'll call them again tomorrow morning. I guess the problem is that PO is saying they delivered it to the zipcode. I'm definitley going to ask for a refund. Whether they'll agree, I don't know.

Hard to fathom that I can sell something to a person, take his money and then shirk off all further responsibility to some disinterested third party [the USPS] and not even bother to purchase the protection that the disinterested third party offers in case they screw up. If you are gonna hire someone to do a part of your job at least hire them the right way.

Post Office is saying it was delivered. Seller is off the hook. Might thing twice about buying from them again.

  • Called them again today in the morning, lady said she need to check the shipping dep and will call me back. Never called me so I just called her again. She said they checked with USPS and its saying its delivered and if I haven't received it then I should file a claim with my home owners insuranceimage

I told her there's no way I'm claiming it with home owners insurance. And that's they're liable to made sure they deliver to me. If they didn't request 'sig required' its their fault not mine. Apparently they don't insure priority mail shipments. Again, they choose the shipping method not me. Finally, she said she's going to transfer me to her supervisor.... and I got an answering machine which I left a message. I doubt anyone will return my call and I don't know what to do at this point. I really feel like taking it up with the CC company but since others pointed out that they might black list me I'm thinking twice.

Even if you took it up with your cc, chances are that you would loose....That Delivery Confirmation holds a "lot of weight."
Filing a billing error dispute does not translate into an automatic win for the cc holder.

Simply don't give up. Write down date , time, to whom you contact, and summarize the converstation. Rather than pay out your claim, they try to discourage your claim.
