Should Teddy Roosevelt replace George Washington on the obverse of the new National Parks quarters?

LongacreLongacre Posts: 16,717 ✭✭✭
A commentary in the January 19 Coin World suggested that Theodore Roosevelt's portrait be placed on the obverse of the new National Parks quarters for the duration of the program. At the end of the program the portrait would revert to George Washington. Does anyone have any comments about this? No one loves Teddy Roosevelt more than Longacre, but I also have an affinity toward the Father of our Country. What do you think about this idea?

Before I even opened the thread, my answer was ...

that's a great idea ... after all, no single person in U.S. history did more than Teddy
to make sure we have the National Park system we have.

Of course I have an affinity to George as well, for without him and his compatriots,
would Teddy have even had the chance? image

The Theodore Roosevelt Association in Oyster Bay, NY would likely be interested in this idea. The Executive Director is James Bruns – he was the driving force behind the Postal Museum. I bet he could muster quite a bit of support.

Further, TR not only remains one of the most admired presidents, he is the only President on Mt. Rushmore who hasn’t been on a coin.

Mt Rushmore has been on at least two coins.

TR deserves to be on a coin, i support it
  • And George Washington has been on both the front and back of a couple coins. He must have a great publicist.

A little late isn't it only about a year out. I sure hope Congress and the rest back there have better things to be working on in that time frame. You know like their weekly U-Tube presentations and stuff.

  • No. Anyone who knows history would know that there would be no United States of America, except for George Washington.

Am I the only one that wishes the quarter would just go back to being a quarter instead of a continuing tribute to places?

  • GREAT IDEA! Except keep Teddy there for 25 years or so, he deserves it. Put Washington on a new $5 dollar coin, take him off the paper dollar and discard it completely, bring back some real art work, dump the worthless penny, (we did just fine without a coin valued at 1/10 of a cent back in the sixties), upgrade the dime and lets get our heads out of our past. Just because we change the designs doesn't have to mean we value the people on them any less. Get some "change" that people will actually use rather than throw in a jar for a year or more at a time. ...I feel better...imageimage

we should eliminate the penny and drop a decimal from our money. Have the dime, half, one dollar and two dollars as coins. Keep the dime in dime size. Make a half dollar nickel size, give us a copper dollar coin the size of a quarter and silver quarter sized coin for two dollars.

I love the idea. I personally would like to see female depictions of Liberty on the coins and remove the lettering "Liberty."

I love that people have turned this into a discussion between George and Theodore. This country is better for both, and wouldn't exist as it does today without the leadership of both.

Oh and when I hear people say "kool aid drinkers" it essentially means that they have drank the kool aid of using such a trite outdated phrase.
  • Starting a new series of ......."Teddy" Quarters....image......not too bad....!!
    ......Larry........image
  • Since a Quarter won't buy anything in todays society they seem to be more of a "token" than coinage..

Why not: "Smokey The Bear" on the national parks reverse image
  • I believe all non-fictional persons should be removed from all coinage and currency.

  • Great idea about Teddy!

HOWEVER, I look at the state quarters and already see Crater Lake and the Grand Canyon, so what are Oregon and Arizona going to do????
  • This works and if not I wouldn't mind if they exchanged Roosevelts on the dime.

There's a lot of jocularity here (screw spelling). But,TR did start the national park system to save something for our kids, and grandkids. Put him on the quarter.

No one President deserves the honor for the National Parks. The first National Parks predate TR by nearly 30 years. Yellowstone was so designated in 1872 by Congress and the Grant Administration. TR certainly expanded and popularized the system.
