Evolution of toning on a Kennedy.

About two years ago I purchased a completely sealed '64 proof set that contained a toned Kennedy. I removed the set and placed it in one of those Whitman coin-set snap plastic holders - here is the picture.



After about a year I reshot the coin. Sitting in the holder with the rest of the coins in that set in a wooden curio display case. The Kennedy had turned more candy-apple red.



Today I reshot the coin. These colors are spot on. It has darkened, while the rest of the set shows very little (if any) change. The Washie is still mint-fresh silver.

Current looks Nice but may turn Black if left alone.

I think it is time to do something to prevent the toning before it gets much darker and turns black. I like it the way it is and thanks for sharing the photos during the process of getting to the way it is today.

How would you suggest that I stop the toning process in it's tracks? The only thing I can think of to do this is to put the Kennedy in an airtite and then place the airtite in an intercept shield holder for slabs. Are there better solutions?

Acetone soak for a minute then place in a 2x2 or what ever you like to put your raw coins in should be enough.

Funny. I like the way it looks in the first picture best.

Joe - in a way I agree with you. The red is what attracted me to the coin in the first place. I'm surprised to discover that the color is continuing to develop. I'll do what I can to preserve the current color and maybe post the result next year.

So are Whitman coin-set snap plastic holders known to cause toning like this?

Or is this unusual?
