How does a First Strike PCGS certified Silver Eagle acquire toning?

I happened to see this auction on Teletrade.

I thought in order to acquire the First Strike label PCGS had to be the one to break the seal on the monster box and that monster box had to be dated before February 1 of that year? In this way, the coins go straight from plastic to plastic; how can they tone? This is the first significantly toned First Strike Silver Eagle I have seen to date. And very rare for PCGS to 69 a toned Silver Eagle. I'm thinking it was somehow toned after it was slabbed but would love to hear your input.

it happens because some people in this world just want to make a buck of
coin collectors who have too much money burning a hole in their pocket.
i would guess it was accelerated by any number of ways. the slabs are not
air tight. this is a left over from the heady days of a few years back when people,
even people on this board, were coloring coins and passing them as natural.

of course there is that small chance of not being AT.. but i doubt it.

Either from the label or from introducing the slabbed coin to some sort of gas.

I have seen this type of toning before on EOR SAE;s where the plastic tube has cracked open or the lid has come off while in the green the monster. It happens.

That coin has been around on TT for a while. The last price I saw was over $300 and it didn't sell. I guess the consignor want's mooon money.

As for 1st strike.. Someone clean it before it was slabbed and booya hence the fuglyness. Pcgs should buy this one back and hide their failure to catch the monkey before they slabbed it.

PCGS is still better than most out there.

Since I believe that 2002 was prior to the 1st strike madness, there are really only 2 choices (and cleaning it prior to slabbing isn't even in the ballpark)....

* It toned in whatever environment it was stored in, within the monster box, and only PCGS saw it as it was opened....if sealed within the monster box, then opened by PCGS, it would get slabbed almost certainly.

* It was slabbed and then stored/gassed in an environment that permeated the PCGS plastic and caused that toning.


Either way, I wouldn't go for that look in a coin.
