Even without the money, I'd still take world class athlete hands down. A distance runner, unlike a major league type of athlete, doesn't really have an off season. Even when not racing, he / she has to be able to get back to running top drawer times fairly quickly.
They really shouldn't be racing a 10K distance weekly, and they only get paid when they place in the top 3. If they don't place often enough, they lose their shoe company contract. Marathoners might race three, possibly four times yearly. Again, if they don't place, they don't get paid.
Regardless of what level you may be, if you're a distance runner who's doing some serious traiining, you're always on the bubble re injuries. And if you're injured, you can't race (at least not if you're sane) or you can put an end to your running career.
Still, with all of the years I've been running, it would be a real rush to beat the best. It's hard to explain; you're either wired that way, or you're not.
