Glad it worked out. That flip definitely looks odd to me, and the card looks trimmed, to my eye.

Maybe it is just me, but in order to spend 3K on a card I would have to be there in person to check it out. I don't care who the seller is or what their reputation might be. Glad it worked out for you in the end.

I was looking at an old SMR this morning and noticed a couple 1933 Goudeys in some auction ads. Now bases on the pictures in these ads I would not say for sure if that 33 Goudey is trimmed??
  • First, to the OP-glad everything worked out for you & like you & so many other I too have learned WORLDS from this site and one other...NET 54. It's a site dedicated stricly to pre-war cards, and the reason I'm bringing it up is t o suggest you post scans over there, hopefully we can get a clear yes or no regarding:

    1- Is the card real?
2-If the card is real, is it trimmed or re-backed?
    3- Is the flip real?

Slightly OT but does anyone else find it surreal that we now have to inspect & have as much knowledge about flips as we do about the cards themselves? Isn't this why flips exisit in the first place - so we know the card is real? It's crazy we have to sit here and compare fonts and lettering and know when they switched spacing and different aspects of the holder...I understand why some people like DiamondMan are quitting the hobby.

    I am missing something...

Does it really matter if the card is trimmed? it is a reprint...right?

Absolutely, scrutinizing flips, holders, fonts, frosty edges, printing characteristics makes me want to stab myself. At some point it just becomes too much trouble.

As a collector who only purchases high grade slabbed items in the 15 to 30 year old age range, it's not as big of an issue for me...but the fake flips are certainly alarming.

I'm fortunate in that I only purchase low and mid grade vintage...not as much of a fradulent slab market I'd think.

    I only find it disgusting.

    .....

The FIX is so easy that the fact it has not been made leaves me incredulous.

If crooks want to slab cards, they should be forced to use their own slabs.
The "technology" is readily available to make genuine slabs WORTHLESS
once they have been tampered with even slightly.

The prices should be raised to allow the FIX the be implemented ASAP.

  • what FIX is that? the sonically sealed edges already show when popped....i have heard of a "sticker" that can be placed on the slab edge.....

i dont know how that would prevent crooks from "obtaining" genuine slabs ,making their own flips, and inserting what they want....

PS...do the craiglist fakes have the raised PSA insignia on the lower right?

The slab should be made of materials that will SHATTER, when tampered with.
(There is - or may be - a durability/fragility issue that will have to be balanced,
but it can be easily done.)

If Chi-Coms make their own slabs, that is a different issue. But, providing GENUINE
slabs to crooks for free is ridiculous.

A CL fake would have the insignia, if a genuine slab was used, OR if it was a "next gen" fake.

I agree completely. Has anyone approached Joe on this specific suggestion? That is, make PSA slabs completely tamper resistant? I don't ever hear of this happening with Beckett slabs, and it seems impossible to crack out a card without it being very obvious.

Who was the seller by the way?

    Steve
    Good for you.

  • << <i>

<< <i>How did the guy know to contact you?

    Steve >>

    Steve-

Because I had bid on one of his auctions (and lost). He then used the ebay email system to contact me (a violation of eBay policy obviously). >>

thunderdan, do you realize that you have violated ebay policy by excepting the offer?
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
    lol excepting.

    Good for you.

Here's a borrowed pic showing one set of the bar codes used with the craigslist scam. Also not all of the cards sold are on craigslist - some have been people who got great deals on craigslist and are flipping them for a profit or to cut their losses.
