I agree the Ryan on the left looks great... I don't see much white on the black border... How is the back of the card centering wise? What was the condiiton of most of the cards? I got two boxes coming and looking forward to the rip..

I don't think centering would keep that out of a PSA 10 holder. The fluctuations in the color in the word 'Astros' may, but the centering is fine. I've got all kinds of PSA 10 Ryans sitting around here that have centering equal to or worse than this one.

how many psa 10 86' topps you got lying around to compare? >>
None. But I've probably landed more PSA 10's from this set than all but maybe two guys on these boards, so I think I can probably speak from a position of (relative) authority on the subject of 1986 Topps in particular, and centering standards for PSA 10's in general.
But it doesn't matter to me if you're dead set on the idea that I'm wrong. If you're tossing 1986 star cards that have all their original gloss and four sharp corners into the trash heap because they're centered like this one then I can almost promise that you're costing yourself money. All I'm trying to do is help- take it for what it's worth.

I wish I had some 1986 PSA 10's kicking around, but it's been a year or so since I graded any. I went through many, many rack boxes a couple of years ago or so when all the PSA 10 Mets were selling in three figures, and I put a lot of those into holders. I had a success rate of roughly 20%, and I'm sure I wouldn't have kicked out any card with that centering.
What kills you on the 1986T is the color pattern in the team name (again, this is my experience- others' mileage may vary), slight chipping along the edges, and extra stock in the upper corners. What does not kill you is centering- either front or back.
the condition was actually really pretty good overall.. the first box had no stars until the last pack that was loaded... the second box was better... corners were strong.. some of the edges had dings.. which would be costly IMO

I have a few and have owned quite a few other Ryans in PSA 10 holders (not that has anything to do with this card). I have seen every 1986 Topps Ryan PSA 10 that has been on eBay. None had anything less than 50/50 centering. You may have pulled a bazillion 1986 Topps PSA 10's, but a Ryan without perfect centering will not be one of them.

Good stuff. If you pull any Ryans with centering like the one shown by the OP, and the corners are all tight and the color is flush, drop me a line and I'll buy every one of them for $20-- raw. This should save you the trouble of grading them.
<< <i>Show me a scan of a slightly OC Ryan in a PSA 10 holder. >>
Like I said-- you've found a buyer for all your '86 Ryans that are completely clean, and that exhibit 45/55 centering or better. I look forward to doing business with you.
<< <i>I don't think centering would keep that out of a PSA 10 holder.......... >>
Agreed, if it wasn't Ryan. >>
I don't think they hold any particular card to a different standard then that which they've established for the rest of the set. Of course I could be wrong, but that just seems too complicated to be a part of PSA's business model. While just over 1% of the Ryans graded have graded a 10, I'm sure that a large number of the 8's are cards which had no shot at grading gem mint. And if you just look at the '10-to-9' ratio for Ryan it doesn't look that out of whack. The Gary Carter, for example, has only 1 PSA 10 and 35 PSA 9's, and I would be very surprised to discover that PSA is setting a standard for this card that's, say, stricter than the standard set for the Schmidt/Brett/Rose, etc.
because I delete them from my photobucket account.. if you ever added anything other then rude comments to a post you would know when they get deleted out of your account they disappear..

Excuse me Ned Flanders but I hate to be a Negative Nelly, but the Ryan on the left is at best a 9 due to L/R centering.

Unfortunately, I agree with this statement. Nice black area though.
