Post your favorite coin purchased in 2008.

SkyManSkyMan Posts: 9,493 ✭✭✭✭✭
Here's a simple one, post your favorite coin that you purchased in 2008, you can even post an extra 1 or 2 other coins if you can't quite make up your mind (but NO more than 3 in total).

Here's unquestionably my favorite coin purchance of 2008. To the best of my knowledge (of course I could be wrong) it was the only gold coin flown during the Mercury, Gemini or Apollo flights. The FIRST US spacewalk occured on Gemini 4.

Here's why the coin is so special:

Within the series, toned Franklins, that I specialize in, this coin was unquestionably my favorite purchase of 2008. There were no mint sets made during 1950, so finding a decently toned 1950 P or D is a very tough endeavour.

This can hardly compare in terms of provenance, but it is probably the prettiest thing I bought this year.

Made quite a few 7070 purchases this past year. I really like most of them. This one is my favorite. It has so much going on. Die cracks, toning, woodgrain, worn dies, and a 180 degree rotation (you can't tell that from this photo, but in the 7070 both the obverse and reverse are right-side up).

Hard to pick just one in a year where I've purchased a lot of pieces that make me smile, but I think the smile for this one is the biggest...

I am a pretty simple guy. I was thrilled to finally obtain an 1885 NGC G6 Liberty nickel - the toughest key to my set, and I have to thank Glenn Holsonbake (PonyExpress8) for helping me with that! THANKS GLENN!!!

    image

...and my second favorite: an NGC 1912-s F15.

    image

Two keys down, one to go...

Anyone wanna help me out with a 1886 NGC or PCGS? image
I have lots of raw Barbers, large cents, seated dimes and quarters Im willing to trade...

Anyway, I hope everyone has a prosperous 2009! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

That's easy for me. I had been waiting for several years to find one I could both afford and which I thought had nice eye appeal. Finally happened in the Baltimore ANA auction...

    imageimage

Edited to add: That Morgan right above me is very, VERY flashy. Very nice. I also like those '57 double mint sets. I have a '56 double mint set (my birth year) that has similar toning...though maybe not as flashy as the '57's here. Also the early gold is great. I'm starting to get the early gold bug. Don't have the wallet for it...but I sure love the looks of some of those old 'beehive' early gold coins.

Here's what I'd say is my most fun purchase of 2008: a Shield 5c struck on a thin planchet that might be a "wrong planchet" that is the accidental intersection of patterns and regular coinage. For more info, here's the thread where we discuss the piece.
