Let's learn about "problem coins"

lcoopielcoopie Posts: 8,798 ✭✭✭✭✭
I know that there are a few problem coins floating
amongst the beauties that are normally shown off here,
so let's see them,
with their grades if available,
and the problems for all to see
and maybe learn from

Even with the problems noted on your coin, it is quite a lovely one.

some of my favorite coins are "problem coins"......you got a problem with that?!? image

i'm afraid this wont be as educational as the coin is raw, but i should have this coming sometime this week from a recent purchase:

This one received a really gentle wipe, but a wipe none the less.
It is in an ANACS Unc Details "Cleaned" slab.

thanks Rampage, my bust half has been with me since the 60s,
when my Dad and I collected.

anyone else have something to share,
or do you not photograph your "problems"?

This 1796 half dime was body bagged for "damage." The damage is a few teeth marks. I've seen early half dimes with worse problems in holders, but this one didn't make it. I bought this one for short dollars, so I didn't mind so much. I sold it raw for a good profit to a dealer.

    imageimage

This one got the ax for "improperly cleaned." This coin was the biggest screw-up I've made in two years. I love early half dimes, and have made some very lucky purchases through the years. But 1796 as always been a bad luck date for me. I always buy the wrong coin, and when the right coin becomes available, I'm always short of funds. image

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

at least ANACS did the collector a service, and noted that the coin is cleaned in the original post. that is certainly a whole lot more honest than PCGS and NGC silently net grading these problem Bust coins, just to make their pop reports look better.

I've got to add one of the six that I had returned as having issues..
This one was not slabbed due to PVC..
    I still don't see it, but I'm a rookie...

I think both of these will find their way into holders one day.

This is what happens when you buy a coin at a show with bad lighting. I purchased thinking I had a mint state coin and a neat VAM, see the 90 in the date. It wasn't till I got home and took some photos that the lines came to light. image
    image

The 93 shows signs of a cleaning, know that I know what to look for, but I just don't
    see the PVC...
It all part of the learning...
    Here's another

    Verdigris, cleaning, scratched, environmental damage.

Cool coin, but would never waste money submitting.

Be cognizant of the color on coins. A natural coin will look, (how shall we say ? ) ugly dark, hardly readable brown and full of dirt.
A cleaned coin will expose all the "natural ticks, flaws, scratches, dings, etc'' in a coin. It will also show dark and light contrasts thoughout the fields mostly.
I don't mind buying a problem once in a while, as long as guys know upfront why they aren't worth more to me.

This one suffered a natural death, but it's death nonetheless.
Scratches. PCGS doubled billed my credit card with a note that said the graders had to have distress bags before they could issue a bodybag.

PVC residue on the first submission. Resubmitted and came back as Altered surfaces though I hadn't done anything to it, at that juncture.

Above the ear one can see the green. I've since experimented with the coin and put it in acetone. ( my first feeling of doing something stupid since I used toothpaste on a couple Morgans years ago ) image I hope acetone didn't hurt it. I don't think another submission is worth it, either ... ??? you ?

P.S. my second post was a joke. I never submitted that coin. It's just a problem.

Aside from the counterstamp, cleaned and punched. I like it, even without a PCGS slab and CAC sticker.

i learned on this 1916-s walker that pcgs "net grades"...here i thought they only bag'd or graded before their genuine service...this is a pre genuine service example

this one is a net graded piece...au50...(one of the sweetest au50's i've ever seen) so you bet when it became available again to me i jumped on it...great price on a favorite year/mm

    in hand images
    image

here's the reason it was net graded...the indent on reverse rim...strike through?...who knows but to most this is a problem coin

This Bust $ is graded genuine (damaged, tooling)... Probably due to the dig in the field @ 10 o'clock, it may also have some old cleaning too.
