Live Break - 2001 Topps Heritage Hobby Box! Starting with first reply

So I've had this box of 2001 Heritage sitting in my room for the past 3 months. I had been intending to build a complete run of unopened boxes, but I know that will never happen. How this box has lasted as long as it has is beyond me. I know that JS will kill me for not doing this in his company, but I know there has to be someone out there, right? I realize that this box has a lot more value unopened, but come ON! It's been sitting there for 3 months! I got a great deal on it, but the only way it would be worthwhile is if there is a nice auto or a star chrome inside. The odds are against pulling an auto, but there should be a chrome lurking inside. I will open the first pack with the first response.

    In before the lock.

    Rip away!

That didn't take long! Cellophane is coming off.

Awesome! I ripped a bunch of that product back in 2001 and haven't seen it since. This is going to be fun. image

Before I open, let the record state that I got this box for a BIN of $200. The MSN Live Cashback was $60, which has long since been frittered away.

Cellophane is off, seal is broken.

Damn it. Hit in the first pack.

    Very nice!

    Pull a red ink auto.

edited to add: I sent this before you hit it. Maybe there's 2 in the box......

This is the second chrome I'v pulled from packs in the past few months, and both had some pretty bad surface issues - pitting, etc.

Nice hit on the Soriano. Could've been a common.

I'm still calling an auto. image

All my black backs are in order. I thought low number SPs should be 1 per pack? These are obviously not reasealed. And why would someone reseal Sps into packs? I don't think Heritage had hot boxes, but I definitely feel like I had one. No regrets so far.

Unless my memory fails me, I think you've already pulled more low numbers in 5 packs than I remember getting from an entire box. Awesome box so far!

Great run of 31-35 with black & red backs on all of them!

39 different low numbers, 10 doubles, 1 triple...decent mix considering 70% of your cards are low numbers. image

Thanks all for looking. No autos, no GU, and 1 chrome that I already had. Looks like I did OK with the amount of low number SPs I received, I am interested in Joe Stalin's input on this box.

I always thought they should have had #311 be Mantle. Of course, back in 2001 I was unaware that Upper Deck had Mantle's exclusive rights. Still, they could've done something a little more distinguished with #311 than make it a short printed card of Doug Glainville.

I kn0w very little about the 01 set but sure looks like you had a great box there
  • gumbyfangumbyfan Posts: 5,168 ✭✭✭
How many holes were you able to fill in your set? Looks like it was definitely worth ripping!

How many other guys on here are sitting on 01 boxes that I don't know about?

You were very unlucky with your box, hits were one per box. W need to remember that autos were searchable in this product. I know you
would of made sure that the topps wrapping was on it, but you just can't trust anyone with these boxes. I would never buy backs either.

    Thanks for sharing the rip!

Any chance you have some of those red and black backs to trade or sell?

I have put together 2 master sets of 2001 Heritage and have sold them over the years. I am now attempting to put another one together so I can pass them down to the grandkids so I could use some of these shortprints.
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

I still have an unopened hobby box.

I stumbled on them in Target when they first came out and bought a few packs. Got a Duke Snider bat card and a Jackie Robinson grandstand card, that started my binge pack busting and went back and probably spent $400 buying all the retail boxes and packs they had then went to the nearest hobby store and bought a few hobby boxes. Completed one master set and another complete set w/o all the 1-80 black/red varations but I sold that and about 40 chromes including a Bonds and McGwire. Still have the master set plus the 2002 thru 2005 master sets.

Current obsession, all things Topps 1969 - 1972

Nice Job, Jeff. Good deal on the box, maybe you didn't break even on $140, but still worth the risk for a fun break. Kevin, there's lots of this product tucked away. I personally know a guy who has over 15 boxes tucked away (he also has over 8 complete chrome sets too)
