National Park Quarters till 2020?

erwindocerwindoc Posts: 5,287 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just read an article saying that the National Park Quarter Bill has passed in the house and senate. It is currently awaiting a presidental signature and expected to be signed within the next 10 days. The bill will produce quarters commerating the national parks until 2020. What does everyone think about continuing these circulating commeratives?

Maybe they'll have 20/20 vision by then.
I suppose if we must commemorate something, it should be on silver or gold. But if those shallow minded individuals passing legislation want to adorn our money for commerce with pretty pictures, they should do it on paper, in living color.

That's my opinion and it's subject to "change", too image

I was wondering what would follow the state quarter series.

Yup, officially 2009 is called "The American Territories Quarters" or something like that. The national parks would start up in 2010. Enough already!

Not too many folks replied to the thread started last week about the issue and most of those that did didn't really contribute much.

Lets see , there are nearly 400 units of the NPS which only about 27+ are officially designated a"National Park" The others fall under historic sites, recreation ares, seashores, etc. and for the most part are all managed the same. Once again, the "system" is entirely ignored as to what is internally referred to as those big parks out west with a Y in their name. While some argue that Yellowstone was the first National Park, it was actually Rock Creek Park in DC that was the first federal reserve set aside for public use. Go to the book store and all the coffee table books are on those 27 + parks mostly in the west. Even the the new Ken Burns 12 hour documenrty film on the National Park Service schedule for release in September 2009 which was previewed before 300 Park Superintendents in Utah this summer was to many of us an absolute disappointment because he too failed to identify with over 300 units of the system. So yes, its Sucks and no, I will not collect them as this program once again fails to provide a proper understanding on what the people of this country own.

    Nice emoticon!

I actually don't feel too strongly about the parks quarters one way or another. It could be a chance for some states to really show off some of the fascinating, lesser-known NPS units such as parkways, historic ranches, all kinds of things. Now if they just throw the usual Yellowstone, etc... on them, that sounds like more of a yawner.

From the casual coin collectors perspective, rotating, circulating commems seem to be a hit. The US Government probably wants another program that uses circulating coins to teach Americans about the US on a topic that has broad appeal and is deep enough to cover several years. The SHQs are like this and were very successful, even if we just consider people collecting them from change. An important consideration is whether the NPQs would be a hit with the general public and casual, pocket change collectors.

<< <i> What other topics would qualify? >>

    NASCAR
    Fast-food chains
    Wal-marts of the United States
    Truck stops
    Nuclear Power Plants
    Invasive species
    Billboards
    Professional sports teams
    Indian Gambling Casinos
    Favorite handguns for each state
    Meth houses

In other words, I think we could be seeing specialty quarters for a LOOOOoooong time!

Many of those are associated with private organizations and can generate sponsor fees to help the country's bottom line. Unfortunately the NPS is part of the US Government so wouldn't help there imageimage

Of course, the US Automakers may want to see "American" car models honored on American coins image
  • There may be an assumption on the Mint's part that with the State Quarters program being so successful that this can be repeated with the National Parks theme quarters.

Where it is possible that the program may be successful, IMO, it is most likely not to be as successful and possibly a failure in comparission to the States program. There was an element at play with the States that can not be mirrored by the Parks, many Americans identify strongly with either the state they reside in or grew up in, or both. This is not present with the Parks theme.
There is no doubt a segement of the population that will be attracted to the Parks theme, but this number will be well below that of the States.

This could well be a case where the success of the program will relie heavily on design, at least intially. For keeping many or some of the new collectors resulting from the States program interested, attractive design will be important, the same applies for generating the interest of totally new collectors.

Existing collectors will of course be all over the board. Some will collect just due to keeping up with the series, others may not touch them regardless of design or mintage, some may pick them up if the designs are great or if the program bombs and low mintages result.

This series most likely will determine a continuation of the commerative circulating series one way or the other. In my opinion of course.

Corporate Bankruptcy series - Remember your favorite corporate logos of the past! Cast, not stamped...in lead

Popular Kitten Videos on YouTube series - Comes in hello-kitty shaped packaging!

Upcoming blockbuster huge star hollywood movie series - Crossbranding galore. Get collectors back into the theaters!

Famous unindicted criminal defendant/co-conspiritor coins - The media likes to play jury. A coin will stimulate the conversation!

(It is so easy to mock this stuff. This really is our future, hunh? Oh, my, I wish we could go back 100 years into the Art Deco period.)

They should commemorate the banks, brokerage houses and boneheads that have destroyed this country due to their ego and greed. This way Americans can be reminded daily who were the criminals that ignored the people and ran our nation into the ground. The last quarter of the series should depict we the people since we let it happen.

I would peronally like to see a clad version of the design that originally won the quarter contest in the 30's, the one designed by Laura G. Fraser, placed on the quarter when things get restarted. The design looks good on the commerative half eagle the mint issued in '99.

Why not TR on the quarter obverse for the duration of the National Parks series?
  • sumnomsumnom Posts: 5,963 ✭✭✭
That's an interesting idea. It seems these days that there is the idea that the obverses of coins can't change.
  • erwindocerwindoc Posts: 5,287 ✭✭✭✭✭
I would be for another Roosevelt on the obverse of a coin(I am a big Roosevelt dime collector). He played a huge part in the National parks anyway and might seem logical, but I agree that many will fight with tradition.
  • My take is anything that helps the citizenry understand the nation's history and resources proves a good idea. The idea of national parks is uniquely american, one of those values that made the country a naton based on ideals. IF the mint produces 5 coins a year over the 11 year period, THEN the seires will move well beyond the 25 top parks and really present an additional 30 or so resources that tell the story of our important civic base, and shared natural and cultural identity.

Also like the idea of presenting those individuals intent on destroying our country on these circulating mini-memorials, for entirely different reasons. Unfortunately, that might require a 200+ year seires...

THey should put national parks on the reverse of the $1 note and give the BEP engravers something interesting to do. NP quarters are going to be rather lousy.
Yellowstone - teeny weeny rocks and trees with a geyser that looks like a tree
Grand Canyon - teeny weeny rocks and trees with a crack in them
Bryce Canyon - teeny weeny stacks of rocks that look like teeny weeny trees
Acadia - teeny weeny rocks and trees on ocean front property
Rocky Mountain - teeny weeny mountains with sharp peaks and elk
Denali - teeny weeny mountains with sharp peaks and moose
Smoky Montains - teeny weeny mountains with round peaks and moonshine
    u.s.w.

Edited: I'm waiting for Lolcat quarters, actually.

You can go through dealers 7 for a $1 foreign junk bins and pick out coins similar in size to U.S. Quarters, and spend them. No problem at all. The store clerks don't even give em a second look.
