PCGS Launches 'CoinFactsWiki.com'

Professional Coin Grading Service introduces CoinFacts Wiki, a public encyclopedia of U.S. and World coins located at www.CoinFactsWiki.com.
The "wiki" concept allows users to create and edit virtually all pages on the website, subject to oversight by system administrators. This capability allows large volumes of up-to-date information and images to be added to the website in a short period of time, creating a massive database of information that is useful to buyers, sellers, researchers and anyone else interested in numismatics.
The CoinFacts Wiki uses the familiar look, feel and format of Wikipedia, the renowned free online encyclopedia used by millions. The rules for use are also similar. The site will be monitored, but coin enthusiasts are free to edit and add to articles at any time. The site also includes a comprehensive list of FAQs to help the user get started.
The CoinFacts Wiki allows data entry for all U.S. and World coins, including everything from generic type coins to individual die varieties. According to CoinFacts President Ron Guth, "The new CoinFacts Wiki is a tremendous way to capture the facts, stories and anecdotes about individual coins that might otherwise be lost to history or published in obscure places. Users will now have access to the collective knowledge of thousands of collectors and dealers, many of whom have specialized knowledge of great value. The public CoinFacts Wiki differs from the traditional CoinFacts website (www.coinfacts.com) in that proprietary information such as the PCGS Population Report and PCGS Price Guide will not be available."
The CoinFacts Wiki is supported by the resources of Collectors Universe and the expertise of the CoinFacts Board of Experts. The CoinFacts Wiki is free, fun, intuitive, easy to use and ready for input today.
"PCGS is very pleased to sponsor the new CoinFacts Wiki" said Don Willis, PCGS President. "This is an amazing format because it's open and so easy to use. We see a lot of numismatic knowledge shared today via our message boards. Now through the CoinFacts Wiki, this information can be easily preserved, shared and collaborated upon. I am sure the new CoinFacts Wiki will become a very popular resource for dealers, seasoned collectors and novices alike."

for REAL dummies. I just want to add one line of text and a photo. I'm too old to know how to use that "convenient" help page
<< <i>for REAL dummies. I just want to add one line of text and a photo. I'm too old to know how to use that "convenient" help page
Try this:
Click edit on the page you're interested in changing and type something like this (including the square brackets - they're magic):
This is my coin description. [[image:MyCoinImageFile.jpg]]
Replace "This is my coin description" with your text, and replace "MyCoinImageFile.jpg" with a more descriptive name for the file you'll be uploading.
Then click the save button. You should see your text and a red link to the image. Click the image link and you'll get a screen where you can upload the image.

Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
<< <i>The CoinFacts Wiki uses the familiar look, feel and format of Wikipedia, the renowned free online encyclopedia used by millions. The rules for use are also similar. The site will be monitored, but coin enthusiasts are free to edit and add to articles at any time. >>
I noticed one difference between Wikipedia and CoinFactsWiki. On Wikipedia, all the content is available under the GNU Free Documentation License. You can see this at the bottom of every page. CoinFactsWiki doesn't seem to say what license it uses. I believe MediaWiki includes a default license so was the license information removed?
Does CoinFactsWiki claim copyright ownership on user contributed information and, if so, what license is being used? What license are contributors allowing CoinFactsWiki to use their content? Should CoinFactsWiki use the GNU Free Documentation License like Wikipedia?
Issues like this become important for wikis as people start contributing a lot of content. Having this clearly spelled out in the beginning will help ensure smooth sailing down the line.
Ron,
Are we allowed to write about banknotes up on the wiki at all? Banknote collecting is almost as popular as coin collecting is.

anything that has been "posted". Is there some means to prevent
this?
I'm just concerned vandals I guess.
Wikepedia has some modern bashing under their entry for coin and
I was always tempted to get in and repair it.
