Is this reasonable? Need some advice on a buying a toned coin

mkman123mkman123 Posts: 6,849 ✭✭✭✭
Hi all, just wanting to know if this is reasonable:

1. Saw a beautiful raw American Silver Eagle, coin store wanted 35 for it. Is this a decent deal? The toning was beautiful.

2. Coin store owner showed me a 1969 proof set, the quarter had beautiful toning on it. Bright golden, still in the original proof case. Again wanted $35.

What I wanted to know if they were good deals or not? Would any of you pay extra just for the toned coins?

Thank you!

I purchased a few toned ASE's for a similar price. Buy them because you like them, not because they are a good deal. It is unlikely that you will get all of your money out of them in the future.

Depending on the toning. Some recent auctions have brought hundreds of dollars because of the toning. But $35 is not too much for nice toning. image

Isn't that for colorful or rainbow toning, not gold toning as described by the OP?
  • Yes, nice toning matters. How much depends on the toning, coin, and your wallet. Look around in the BS&T section and on the web for toned coins, see what can be had, then make up your mind if the coins you saw are worth it (after figuring out if the toning is natural/real.) Fake toning is not worth a premium, keep that in mind.

  • this one went for just under $60 pcgs ms67, judge your dealers price according to eye appeal.

do a search here for toned ASE and you will find info.

  • I wouldn't want the 69 proof set for that price

    unless the toning was spectacular

Some of us have been known to pay a little extra for nice toning.

thanks everyone for your response, I'll probably pick up the ASE but not the proof set. The quarter was toned bright golden almost like it had been gold coated no crazy colors.

I've seen that look, that you described, on quarters from that era ('69, '70). Close enough to common that I wouldn't pay more than a buck or two premium, if that.

The SAE....if no milk spots, no fingerprints, and natural toning...sure, get it.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

That is a small price to pay for something you enjoy.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
