What is it with the grading on Moderns? (photos added)

I submitted three coins that looked flawless under 10x and 30x magnification.

1960 Proof Washington .25 - Hoping for a deep cameo came back Pr68 Cameo Photo now in!

2001 Buffalo Proof- a perfect coin comes back pr69

1994 SMS .05 returns ms68 no fs designation.

Subjectivity or bias?

The 60 proof to me should have been graded a 69. The scratches in the hair are actually in the slab. Only visible blemish under magnification is a small hairline at 7:00 halfway to the rim from Washington's nose.

dont forget, all grading is an opinion. MS 68 and 69 and basically indistinguishable from a MS 70 with the naked eye.

Were you the original owner of the 2001 Buffalo????? Just curious.

    Sorry about your frustration.
  • No, not the original owener on the buffalo. Bought a 2-coin set and sent both in for grading. The business strike had a visible flaw under magnification and have no issue with the MS69 grade it recieved. I spent 15 minutes looking at the Proof under 4x, 10x, and 30x and failed to find a flaw. I cannot understand that within a few seconds they can conclude this coin had a minor flaw to it. Did the same with the 60 proof quarter which I will post photos of when I get the coin back. It to looked flawless. Not frustrated, but wonder if the little guy is behind the 8-ball when submitting modern coinage.

There is no bias, no special treatment.... the graders are more skilled than you. That being said, it is, in the final analysis, an opinion - albeit an expert opinion. Cheers, RickO

10X!! 30X!! You're using the wrong equipment, you need one of these!!!

There appears to be two small hairlines to the left of GW's forehead, and there appears to be a small spot above "we". Those could have knocked it down to 68.
  • my camera skills are lacking. But there are no lines above the forehead and no bemishes in or around the lettering.
  • on last bump.

Please take my comments as constructive rather than critical. Some 1960 proof Washingtons have blisteringly white devices and perfect mirrors. They are money coins. The one you posted isn't. You'll have better luck submitting on that basis.

    1. 6-9X is more than adequate, using a 30X loupe is unnecessary.
    2. what Don said on the Quarter.
    3. hard to judge the other two without a picture/comment.
  • Looked at the referenced coin. Not questioning whether it deserved DC but rather the 68 grade. Looking at the Heritage coin, what is going on with the right hip of the eagle? There is nothing on my coin to even take a second look at.

Sounds like you feel strong enough about it...why don't you crack it? I'm sure some will agree that it takes a couple of times to get it in the "right" holder.
