Resubscribe to Coin World...or not?

A couple of years ago, I let my CW subscription lapse well...I don't know, but I just did. Lately however, I have thought about renewing it. Should I renew it or not? What do you guys like/hate most about CW?

I certainly won't tell anyone else what to do, but I let it lapse due to the crap ads they entertain.

It is now a magazine with color pictures. If you haven't seen it for a couple of years it would probably be interesting to you to see a copy. Content is still as it was. Steveimage

I've subscribed for many years. They do cover all the "breaking news" in the hobby - what the Mint is doing, show reports, top auctions - as well as having good columnists. Not every issue is a home run but I enjoy getting a weekly burst of coin news in the mailbox.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I faced that same decision about 5 years ago and decided... not.

    I haven't missed it.
    When in doubt, don't.

I renewed for 2 years, including Coin Values magazine. Current Coin World has a huge article about the Chinese counterfeits on eBay. I got CW editor's attention with my muckracking a few weeks ago, and they agreed to publish Susan Headley's research. Too bad the ANA has been so ineffective.

I've subscribed for 25 straight years. I'm considering canceling....it's just not as relevant as it used to be. I also don't like the new format (magazine).

Maybe the Internet is slowing killing it, just like the newspapers?

It's cheap, and overall, it is worth it. The editorials have to go, though.

    I love the editorials!

  • I like getting the news every week. Not every issue is spectacular, but 2 or 3 articles each month catch my eye. I personally like it much better than The Numismatist, and since I don't think the ANA is worth a damn, I let my membership run out in favor of Coin World

One of the reasons I keep my subscription is for the discount on supplies through Amos Hobby. I save a buck per 3-pack on my VAMSlab materials, which more than covers the cost of the subscription.

CW has quite a few articles on new discoveries that are either not published elsewhere or are given less detailed treatment. They also seem more interested in publishing original research articles that present new information to hobbyists. On-line secondary sources merely repeat parts of articles and leave out key material when they paraphrase.

Your question seems to be: “How close to the source do your want your numismatic information to be?” If you like it predigested, then go with on-line paraphrases; if you like to know as much as you can, then consider a subscription.

I've gotten it for about two years now and read it most of the time unless my dog or kid rips it up. I enjoy it and say go ahead.
  • I like to read CW, but the ads are not filtered. The Coin Values articles are a must read, but most of the information in the Coin World Magazine is on the net for free. Also, the values listed in the Coin Values is too high and mislead collectors. I would subcribe again, but I can find this information on the Internet so I will let it run out.

One thing I like about CW is the ability to "view" CW's I haven't yet received.

One thing I do NOT like about the "Online CW" is the online archives only go back about 13 or 14 weeks.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!

funny, I was a big CW fan a few years ago...when they switched format to the small version I really lost interest in what they have to offer.... if your looking for a old newspaper feel give Numismatic News a try....
