Damaged Mint Item...should I return?

Yesterday I picked up my most recent mint order which was a 1/4 and a 1/2 oz Buff Unc. Totally beautiful coins IMO. I opened the 1/4 ox first and was surprised at the really nice box that it comes in. A nice coin for sure. When I pulled the 1/2 ox out of the box I noticed that the outer sleeve has, well for lack of a better description, a decent size gouge in it. Upon opening the box the coin was out of the plastic holder rattling around...so I went, washed my hands, picked it up very gingerly and replaced it in the holder. Looking at it via a loupe showed no visible damage to the coin so I was happy about that. But...I thought I would get a couple opinions on what to do about the outer sleeve. Should I send the whole thing back to the Mint for replacement or could they be cajoled into just sending me a replacement sleeve? Or try and find one in the secondary market?

I am not a big 69/70 person so not overly worried about the coin itself, just the potential hassle from the Mint on the return...I have never returned anything but have not heard 100% good things..

Anyway your thoughts are appreciated!

I've waited 3 weeks now for a return to process. No word yet.

I'd just try to find a replacement sleeve, if the coin is in great shape. I got a 1/2-oz with a couple little marks on it, so I don't know how good the quality is. Plus, these will go dark SOON, and you may not even get a replacement.

  • If you do return them the Mint will reimburse you for the postage, call them once they have received the returned order to let them know the amount.

So let me get this straight.

The coin is fine but the packaging has been damaged so you're considering a return? image
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Yeah...all of my Mint stuff is in OGP (oh the shame!) and I would like the packaging to be in good shape hence my dilemma. Is it a really bad problem for me like if the coin was visibly dinged? No...but to send the whole thing back just to replace a damaged cardboard sleeve seems silly to me...and honestly I am concerned about the possibility that I send it back for replacement and end up with a refund instead due to no more availability.

Good point, it maybe less frustrating than dealing with the US mint.

Last year I received a BU 1/2-oz. plat that had obviously been run over by a forklift. The packaging was obliterated but the coin was fine. I opted to keep the coin and try to receive a replacement package. I called the Mint and they said that they would be able to send a replacement package but it would be on backorder. Since then, I have received a monthly email stating my PROOF replacement box is on backorder. I have called at least TWICE to inform them that the box I am requesting is for the BU version. On Monday, I received an email stating my PROOF plat box is on backorder. Then, on Tuesday, I received another email stating that my order was on backorder....same order #....but the text stated that it is for an " ABE Silver Unc Replacement". I almost called the Mint to ask WTF??? but figured it was a waste of time.
The idea of buying a replacement on Ebay is convenient....but when I checked on a plat box last year the cost was around $10. Homey don't play that game.
