XF-40 Barber Halves...

I don't know much about Barber Halves other than that I like 'em.

I've seen some tremendous XF-40/45 examples with oodles of eye-appeal.
Seems to me that assembling a set of Barber Halves in this grade would be quite
a sight to behold, especially with carefully selected eye-appealing pieces.

Has anyone completed, in the process of completeing or attempted to complete
this set in XF-40/45? Any real stoppers? Experience?

Also, Post an image of a XF-40/45 Barber Half if you are so inclined!

  • I agree with you.

Barbers in that grade seem to be very very popular. I think all the barbers series are very collectable in these circulated grades, and I don't know if the same can be said for alot of 20th century coinage. At least not for me personally.

Craig (USCGCraig) completed a set PCGS 45, which I believe is still registered.

Mike (MFH) is an avaid collector of Barber Halves, as is Tom (tombr), Tyler (ARCO??) and several others

I had a strong VF set that was complete, though none of the coins was certified. The coins were almost all completely original and the task of putting the set together took approximately five years. I have since broken up the set.

I spent a 1/2 hour or so looking at Lt. Craig's registry set. All that I can say is "amazing"!!! What a fine collection
    of circulated Barbers.

The 1897O and 1904S would be stoppers for me in XF.

Spend 4 or 5 hours reading the Big Barber Thread (Post some new Barber images). It's pretty amazing reference material and you can see the week to week struggles and rewards of folks that came before you. They're sweet coins and if you can accomplish that set collectors will genuflect on behalf of your effort.

    I don't have a half. How about a quarter?

Completing a set in XF 40 / 45 isn't as easy as some non Barber collectors think it is; Craig got
hung up on the 1905-P - as it was a POP 2 coin - and it took him forever locating one [ he ended
up buying any original 05-P in as close to XF 45 he could find [ in and out of PCGS holders ]
...AU 50's and XF 40's ...eventually one of his XF 40's upgraded after numerous submissions
and Presidential Reviews. At one point he offered a $500 reward to anyone who could lead
him to a 1905-P what would cross as a 45 at PCGS.

My primary set of halves is in AU 58 - and the show stopper is the 1901-S [ I have an AU 53 ]
with a POP = One and the 1897-S which has no AU 58's registered at PCGS [ again, an AU 53
    resides in my set.]

Good luck starting your collection - and please feel free to call upon any of the Barber
Half Registrants if you have any questions, we're always glad to help out wherever we can.

Here's a nice 1904-O in XF 45 which I bought from Dogwood and I feel is undergraded
    and should be a 50:

....and for comparison sake here's my AU 58:

The 1904-O in PCGS 58 was originally in an NGC 61 holder.
