Platinum (and now gold) just passed rhodium!

Platinum $854, rhodium $850 at the moment. Amazing!

It wasn't that long ago that rhodium was over $10k per ounce. Now it's getting close to the price of gold.

  • Rhodium was the most manipulated market of all. When it was flying high at $10K, the link on Kitco read "INVEST in Rhodium." They have changed that to "INVESTING in Rhodium." A subtle, but significant difference. image

  • When rhodium is less than paladium I might buy some...then again maybe when it's less than silver. Man would that stuff have been a mistake. Sometimes it's good to be broke.

What say a trade of Irridium for Herculinium?

Zirconium for Manzinite and perhaps Imodium

So what use is Rhodium? And what caused the runup? After all of thes runups and sudden dropoffs it seems that gold was about the only stable metal.

Actually Rhodium has quite a number of uses:

    1. 81% of supply used in three way catalytic converters in cars

    2. Used for its hardening and anti corrosive properties.

    3. Used in electrodes for air craft spark plugs.

    4. Used for optical instruments

    5. Used as a catalyst in industrial processes

    6. Used as a filter in mammographs

    7. Used to make laboratory crucibles

Back in the day, we sold rhodium plated costume jewelry. Our catalogs bragged about the "fine rhodium plating!"

  • The key is a proton exchange membrane, or PEM, containing platinum. The platinum acts as a catalyst that separates electrons from the hydrogen gas atoms. The free electrons are gathered as current and the positively charged hydrogen ions pass through the membrane where they readily combine with oxygen atoms to form water.

Gold, rhodium and platinum are now trading within 6% of each other in price.

Any guesses which one will be the most valuable a year from now? My guess would be gold.

I don't own any ... but I'd put up a cup of java ...that Rhodium will be over 2K an oz by the middle of next year.

Kitco has pool accounts for rhodium as well as other metals, but the rhodium spread between buy and sell prices looks very wide to me.
