It will be interesting to see if this announcement will affect the number of listings appearing on Ebay.

And what kind of hype the sellers will be using? I don't think you could over hype these coins!
  • I received mine today. Beautiful set.

Mine is In Stock and Reserved...from the day it went back on sale at the lower price last week.

Keeping my fingers crossed that it's not cancelled!

Sure you can. Anything can be over-hyped. Just the existance of this thread stating "Finally Sold Out" is hype in itself!

On the other end of the stick though, once the returns come in, they'll go back on the market.

    Fixed-Fixed Link

And why is this such a good deal? $580 premium for the MS70 on the single coin or what?

there will probably be some returns, but its unlikely to be a significant number. it will just mean a few backorders will get filled.

Which of the First Spouse coins was it that went "unavailable" then "available" then "unavailable" then "available" and on and on?

Now that was a hoot to watch!

I Have not seen that. Also this set is now listed as unavailable on the list of unavailable items. I think that is a final cut-off.

The set is unavailable. I placed an order in the middle of last week, it's been on backorder since and the date keeps getting pushed back. A handful of returns aren't going to change anything; will just fill a few open backorders. We've all seen this many times before.

I think you're referring to the Jefferson UNC. I remember I didn't own any gold and missed the boat on the first two Spouse's. By the time I heard
of the hype on the Jeff, it was already "sold out" and I remember placing an order just for the hell of it and it got fulfilled. I should've been way down on the wait list for that one!

I'm starting to wonder if the 1 oz UNC Plats are gone also. I've had some on hold since last Wed. And no it's not a CC issue. Usually they process quicker than this.....

Seems like orders are "on hold" longer and longer. I dont remember it taking that long in the past. I mean every order over $300 is put on hold for a week? What do they offer below $300 anymore? Coin spoons? The mint is an enigma.

    Calling 7over8, calling 7over8.........................

What ballpark does this put the estimated mintages at now?

I just had a feeling about those 4pc unc sets going dark soon. What a way to close a series, with a nice design and low mintage. I think the Buffs will do the same.
Need something designed and 3D printed?

    In my Opinion -

I believe the set is done at 1250. You may see sales that exceed that - maybe hundreds beyond that number. There are real crazy things happening on that sales report......explained only by the USM's desire to have backup orders in place for potential returns.

They key is that the backorder status started at ~1257, last week, before they went down for repricing.

  • jmski52jmski52 Posts: 22,993 ✭✭✭✭✭
Now, I suppose that the speculation begins on the 1/2 ozers and the 1 ozers!!

The problem remains the same - limited capital - with the proof and burnished AGEs, the proof and burnished Gold Buffs, and the low mintage proof and burnished '08 Plats - all of them are looking at all-time low mintages, and most of them being discontinued.

    Did I mention "limited capital"?

  • When I ordered my UNC Plat set on Thursday they were still in stock. They didn't go to back order status until a couple of hours later. My bet is that the set total is 1,500 and the amount sold is just under that, leaving room for a few returns that were bad enough that they couldn't be resold.
  • What was 2006-W Platinum Unc. 4 coin set sales??

What was 2006-W Platinum Unc. 4 coin set sales??

If I recall correctly, it was 1,989 sets.

Sales of the 2008-W unc. 4 coin sets could be lower. (But not as low as the 2009!) image

Man that's going to kill the market the RP was bringing over a grand now you can get both coins for about the same price as a 69 RP.

I have my doubts if there are going to be many takers even at the reduced price. I believe the First Strike PCGS 70's should hold their price at around 1k

First Strikeimage That's really value added. I have many "first strike" and "first releases", wait a year and they go for right around any other properly graded coin in a like holder.

I gave up on the whole "First Strike" idea after PCGS took it away from us last spring. I know they gave that privileged back recently, but the damage is already done as far as I am concerned.

I gave up on the whole "First Strike" idea after PCGS took it away from us last spring. I know they gave that privileged back recently, but the damage is already done as far as I am concerned.

I think First Strike is next to meaningless when it comes to platinums.

With the proofs, First Strike didn't exist until more than halfway through the series. You can't collect a full set of FS labels on proofs, so the incentive to have them at all is decreased.

FS was available for the w-uncirculated coins. But the number of possible FS labels for 2008 is absurdly low. Demand isn't so high on the series as it is, I just don't see the FS labels having a long run premium significant enough to make them worth it.

Also, buying early (at least some early sales were probably attributable to desire for FS labels) ended up burning some people, hard.

Look at the issue price for the 4 coin platinum proof set from the Mint:

    In May: $4120
    In July: $4589
    In Oct.: $2420
    In Nov.: $2180

There were 759 4 coin platinum proof sets sold prior to October 2008.

Even if all those were sold at the initial $4120 price (instead of $4589), it would come to approximately $3.2M

At current prices, the same 759 sets would cost approximately $1.65M.

Which means those 759 unlucky early buyers lost a combined $1.5 Million.

If you bought a 4 coin proof set in May, you paid 4,120. The same set, now, is almost $2,000 cheaper.

The FS set value would have to be worth $2000 MORE than the regular set to cover the additional acquisition cost.

And even then -- it wouldn't be profitable; that's just to hit break even. FS labels might carry a premium... maybe $20, maybe $50, maybe even $100 per coin. But that isn't saving any of the FS 2008 platinum owners from a big loss. Don't get me wrong -- that loss isn't the fault of the Mint, or PCGS... it's just a factor of the huge drop in platinum from $2300 to $800 in a matter of a couple of months.

Does anyone have the final '06 W Unc. plat. mintage numbers? I know that they are on other threads, but I can't find them now. Thanks.

And now the full 4 coin set in PCGS FS MS70 is offered by one dealer at $19,995.
    Nice increase.

    Did he get it?

As I stated “offered” which doesn’t mean that it has been sold.
The point is that many of these rarer sets 10+ years out in FS 70 are bringing big prices.
I’ve personally seen many other key moderns sell for big numbers.

  • coinercoiner Posts: 697 ✭✭✭✭

The time period of 2005-2009 was a great period for scoping out potential winners from the USM offerings and actually having a good “flip”.
Many of these issues were flipped and funded collections of the same or other moderns.
No bots. You actually could get the item when you were present at noon on the day of issue.

I had assembled a full collection of the 1/10 Oz Pt coins
graded at MS 70. I sold them, and now i regret it ! :(
I may try to do this again !

That's definitely true about the 70s, but some prices are "aspirational".

2008 was a wild year with many different precious metal offerings (including 08 W Prosperity Set, 08 W Buffalo gold sets, 08W Platinum unc. and proof sets, etc.) and with greatly fluctuating precious metal prices (especially platinum). I was able to buy some offerings but delivery of some of these went well into 2009. So, you many times didn't know if you really had the coins until the Mint shipped them in 2009. The late ship dates and the returns of coins due to lower prices made it difficult to meet First Strike cut off dates. That may be a reason for small number of First Strike coins from 2008.

    edited for typos.

  • I think I have a 4 plate set.
