Thank God I Never Got Caught Up In The PSA Set Registry

With the economic recession looming larger by the day, I can only imagine the losses that will be taken by those who holdered all those commons, regardless of the grade as they will certainly be the first to plummett. If it ain't Mantle, Mays or Aaron get ready to take a bath.image

  • Just reality, would you not agree? I am not wishing bad fate on anyone but everyone is going to be bathing soon. I took mine in Energy and Gold stocks and others will choose their posion depending on their passion.

What makes you think registry people are trying to "Get out" and make money off their commons? image
  • EstilEstil Posts: 7,225 ✭✭✭✭✭
I hope you got those gold stocks five years ago back when gold (relatively speaking) was dirt cheap. At least compared to what it must be now and especially what it was back in 1980.

While I've jumped on the PSA bandwagon myself, I think I'll just stick with only HOFers and checklists in graded form. The commons and semis can stay where they belong; in a binder/pages. image

  • No I do not agree. If I had the time, I could post 100's of random PSA graded commons that have sold in the last few days for ridiculous money thanks to the registry. This topic regarding the economy and realized prices for graded cards has gotten old. The prices on cards have not taken much of a hit if any at all. There are many on here that have mentioned that they are in a solid buying mode but have not been able to get the awesome deals they were expecting.
  • Perkdog,

I'm not saying they are or not at this point, if it were me I know I would be trying to liquidate while I could.
  • packCollectorpackCollector Posts: 2,786 ✭✭✭
don't we build these sets to collect and if so why are collectors going to liquidate now ? from a dealer perspective it will be tougher to grade out sets in the near term but after the dust settles , I would expect collectors to jump back in. I think what oyu will see is less sets started , there will be some liquidations(this happens all of the time anyeay) but a mass exodus seems unlikely.

Well I sure wouldnt as I would sit back and wait, most reccessions last about a year and a half. I mean if your hurting for money and you got no choice sure you might get screwed right now but honestly I dont believe many registry guys build sets for investment purposes and are looking to get out right now.

Then why am I building a 1983 Donruss set? Oh yeah, I remember, stupidity.

I've noticed a drop in some low pop commons I'm buying but nothing drastic. Think of it as a buying opportunity.

When 1988 Topps cards are selling for over $100 at PSA 10, I'd say there's nothing wrong with the card market. Sure, it was a Ripken, but in that set, every card is a common.

Tell you what, since you're concerned about the card market, you can liquidate your card collection to me. image

i bailed out on a bunch of my stuff in the early 90's when i thought the market was tanking.......ok, that's a lie. i used the cash to do silly stuff, like buy a house, but if i had a third foot, i'd use it to kick my own ash for getting rid of some of the stuff i've gotten rid of. image

    not this time.

In all honesty, it's been really hit or miss for me. I notice some items selling above average, substantially so...and then there are others that are selling well below average.

if people begin to sell off their collections,
there will be other set collectors out there gobbling up their sell offs.

assuming everyone who has a set registry is in need of money & is selling off their sets for discounts to boot doth not make sense captain.

    the market will self-balance,
    unlike the US economy.

Wow someone is uptight. Chill dude. Prices will drop on cards were the supply has outstripped demand. Most HOFs from the 60s and 70s fit that mold. Rare and hard to find in 8 or better HOFs and commons will still sell well. I have not seen much of a drop off in prewar cards except a softening of below PSA 4 T cards. That to me is a market correction as alot of people started chasing VG-EX and below HOFs and drove pricing up above normal levels the last 2 years.

  • Larry,

If you have young children would you allow them to view that sort of material?

Wow - thanx for the thread.

This is a non sequitur of sorts.

    Hmmm - 29 responses while a thread on memorabilia - pins - received 1 or 2?

Thanx for the insight, thought and sensitivity. It's always nice to see fellow hobby friends supporting each other with such empathy and concern.

    Stone

EDIT: IF THIS IS SO IMPORTANT THAT IT NEEDS MENTIONING - WHY NOT REPORT THIS OVER AT THE REGISTRY FORUM - WHERE IT BELONGS - I THINK THE PEOPLE OVER THERE WILL FIND THIS STARTLING OBSERVATION VERY ASTUTE AND NOTEWORTHY.

lol, I guess your children don't watch television at all? If they do, then they are bound to see that on commercials even. Do you not let them go to the beach? If you do, then chances are they have seen girls in bathing suits. Stop being so uptight.

My best guess would be no and I dont believe if they did they would be much interested a thread about set registry cards tanking.

Folks find entertainment value in the display and competition aspects
of the registry. That value will not vanish when prices tank.

I don't think a down economy changes the mind set of a person that pays crazy money for a low-pop common. These people have larger quantities of disposable income, and larger reserves of cash to weather rough economies. Their set rating is a source of pride, they aren't selling. The guy trying to turn a dollar on newly-graded (from finds and the like) low-pops may not make as much as a year ago, but it won't be anything to sneeze at. The stuff I buy seems to be within 10-15% of what it was in April.
