I thought the chart about the world silver supply and demand was neat but it talks a lot about the uses of silver.

THe amount of silver used for industrial and in photography is astounding!

Isn't the amount used in photography way down, due to the introduction of digital cameras?

    Not really.

The third world has just been exposed to photography. 35 MM cameras are cheap enough and all the rage.

Billions of users have never seen photography before.

Can't just limit our outlook to first world technology.

agree with deadhorse. Digital cameras are common here but over in Africa, India, and other countries their probably thinking 35mm is the best thing ever made!

  • this is funny.... there are very few "film" companies left. kodak is out of the film business. I think only Fuji remains. And you think film photography is growing??

edited to include this from the silver institute:

Photographic demand continued to decrease, falling by 11 percent in 2007 to 128.3 Moz. The bulk of the decline was accounted for by lower consumer demand for color film, this sector being most affected by further inroads from digital photography

A couple of billion of new users can certainly change things in a hurry. The populations of the US and Europe are not the only sources. If the silver institutue is anti-silver anything like the international gold and monetary organizations are anti-gold, then I wouldn't put a lot of faith in their published stats. These organizations tend to be nothing more than shills for central bank wishes.

What effect will a billion new drivers have on the car industry of the near future?

  • Yeah, this is funny alright, perhaps in 35 to 50 years:

    KNOWLEDGE: Photography Demand for Silver
Photography demand for silver represents approximately 22 to 25 percent of total silver demand. A prevailing issue is the inception of new technologies such as digital photography that may significantly reduce silver demand. In BI.C’s view, silver demand from photography will cease to exist in the very long term such as 35 to 50 years. But until then, much of the third world cannot afford digital cameras or the computers to download the pictures. Until then, traditional camera photography will remain maintaining a strong demand for silver for the foreseeable future. It has been reported that silver demand from photography is actually growing modestly with total photography silver demand in the area of 200 million ounces a year. Demand from first world countries for photography from silver use is expected to decline modestly as the demand for digital cameras becomes more popular.

What I think is funny is that people here still don't understand what is behind the Silver Institiute's propagandized press releases.

That's absolutely right. I worked for the "Photo Giant" so I can tell you first hand that demand for 35mm film has declined precipitously due to conversion to digital cameras. And even in many lesser developed countries, photos are taken on inexpensive digital cameras or cell phones, and shared, but never downloaded or printed.

The curve for medical film is much flatter due to the prohibitive cost of digital medical imaging. But the cost is decreasing, so even in that space the demand for silver halide film is declining. There will be some demand for years, and many hobbyists still use film, but it will be a very small percentage of overall silver demand.

Which is?? I am confused. Silver is good or not so good?
    Thanks

one of the big things in developing countries is........cellular phones

most have phone cameras.....it's all they need.

silver on paper is a big issue, too....many high quality papers and paper vavrieties are gone or hoarderd

silver for photography use is a dying demand issue, and has been for years....i didn't need to look at the chart....even factoring in all those who have never used or could afford a camera.
